Hotels for Venice - Jan '14 - $220 Max
 

I am planning a trip for my husband and I. We will be in Venice for 3 nights, and i am finding the hotel choices very overwhelming.

I'd like some suggestions, our price range really maxs out at $210 per night. I'd like to be near st. mark's square. since it will be Jan, i don't want to have to make 30 min walk to the main sights.

I know we won't be in our room to much but i'd also like a room that is not a shoe box.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I find one hotel i like but then i read reviews and i just don't know if its good any more.

This i also the last part of our trip, 3 nights each in Rome then Florence first, so i'd like this part of the trip to be a nice capstone to the vacation.

The OP's budget limit is about 155-160 euros per night at the current exchange rate. Rates will probably be higher on weekends.

nmtrumble, you should be able to get into the Hotel Flora depending on your exact dates, but I would look beyond the San Marco area. Even in January.

Typical hotel rooms in Venice are shoe boxes, especially the hotels in the heavily congested area around San Marco. The "economy" rooms at Hotel Flora are smaller than shoe boxes, more like a glove box. I believe the same is true at the Locanda.

Space in Venice comes at a steep premium. It's just the way it is there. January can get very cold and damp. Staying close to San Marco is probably a good idea, unless the place floods.

Assuming (perhaps incorrectly) you're not going over the New Year's holidays, January is just about the slowest time of year for Venice. You should pretty much be able to take your pick of hotels because the rates will be so low (comparatively speaking). Your best bet is to go to Venere.com and plug in your dates. You can have the prices shown in $ or in Euro. Remember, the dollar amount is only an estimate of what the euro rate is on any particular day - not a reliable indication of what it will be a couple of months from now. Once you've narrowed down your favorites, you can google the hotels and check out their own websites. Very often they've got better rates if you book with them directly. Have fun deciding!

It's a ten minute walk from the Rialto Market/Rialto Bridge.

I see all of Venice as "the main sight". Not merely St. Mark's Square. You will be near a few museums and the aforementioned market and bridge. And very very close to a vaporetto stop.

We enjoyed Hotel Flora and our room wasn't small.

We stayed at Locanda Orseolo and our room was not a shoebox, nor a glovebox. It was a Superior courtyard room and was quite spacious with a lovely big bathroom and beautiful decor, very Venetian.

We loved this hotel and the staff who were so friendly and helpful. Located near St.Mark's but tucked away from all the busyness.

I second the suggestion of not necessarily staying near San Marco. Much of the beauty of Venice is located everywhere else. And you'll want to explore that.

If you don'r mind a bed and breakfast, Ai Tagliapietra b&B is fantastic. Very close to San Marco, nice rooms, very clean, free wifi, and a fantastic owner who will go out of his way to make you welcome (Lorenzo). He directed me to a tiny gelatteria with the best chocolate gelato ever!

Try Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo; we stayed there last year and it is delightful. Competent, friendly staff and well-located. I think that it is in your price range and is ranked #4 by TA.

I have stayed at the HOtel Flora several yrs ago and loved it but checked prices for our stay Sept 2014 and the prices range from $301 (for a shoebox) - $475 US (larger overlooking garden) and that is with today's exchange rate. This is way beyond the budget of nmtrumble who is seeking advice. Perhaps they are much lower in january due to weather.

That's September rates, and September is high season. The OP is going in January. A Superior Double at the Flora for random, mid-week dates in January 2014 is currently running 154 EUR (US$218) per night. The next category down is 135,50 EUR (US$192) per night.

We stayed at hotelanastasia.com just last month and thought it was quite nice. It is managed by the Violino D'Oro hotel which is directly in front of it and both are only a 3 minute walk to the square. Felt removed from the touristy day time but also very close to vaparottos and variety of restaurants. The staff were a great help in providing maps, directions, and advice (and a very nice breakfast). Just make sure you have a good walking map to the hotel BEFORE you get there. Even GPS is hard to use in Venice.
