Hotels at Heathrow
 

We need to overnight at Heathrow in March/April. We will be arriving at terminal 5. I see that there is a Sofitel at terminal 5, but I am a bit put off by the price---about $300 Canadian per night. Other surrounding hotels seem to be less than half that.

Any suggestions for clean, quiet hotel to overnight in?

I always PriceLine hotels at LHR. All of the 3 and 4 star hotels in the PL heathrow zone are on or just off the Bath Rd/A4 and on the Hotel Hoppa (paid) shuttle routes.

I've never paid more than US$75 US and usually in the $45-$55 range. Unless you have or want to earn points, really no reason to pay more.

Heathrow is one of the best places to get great deals by making a bid on Priceline. Check www.biddingfortravel.com to see what hotels people are winning and the price they are paying. We've done it lots of times at LHR and never had a problem.

In addtion to the advice above: Yes, Priceline... or Hotwire .I've used both for LHR area.
E.g., in April you can get the Sheraton Heathrow for less than $90 including fees and taxes, on Hotwire.
www.betterbidding.com has lists that help match the hotels with the icons you see on Hotwire. You can often figure out what hotel you will get.

My advice would be to join up with the Travelodge website for their email special offers.
Last April we paid 8GBP per night for a room that while basic, had clean bathroom, hot shower, and comfortable bed.
If you're only staying overnight, and just looking for somewhere to sleep, it can't be beaten!

Should also add that the Travelodge Heathrow 5 is on the Hotel Hoppa shuttle route - about 15 minutes from the terminal.
In the foyer I saw the rack rate advertised at 89GBP per night.

The Sofitel is the only hotel AT T5 - all the others are a bus / taxi ride away.

Note however that Hotel Hoppa services to T5 aren't as good as for T1/T3 so take that into account before booking

alanRow's comment is valid - about the T-5/Hoppa issue.

For 2 or more I'd probably use a taxi anyway so the hoppa timetable might not be a big deal.

I'm not sure where you get the $300 rate as their website has rooms for $147 ( no cancel,no change). If that worries you, you can get a room which you can cancel up to 3 days in advance for $175. It is the best hotel at Heathrow and especially convenient for T5. However, if price is your most important issue, the suggestions for Priceline is your best bet.

Personally I think the Premier Inn ( usually similar in price) is superior to the Travelodge. I stayed in one at Gatwick and wouldn't return if it was free.

For anyone else with a similar question though:

We just stayed at the Radisson Edwardian which is pretty much across the road from Heathrow and it was excellent. Ask for one of the recently renovated rooms but even the unrenovated ones are fine. I don't know what their rates are normally but we had a great deal -- we paid 99 pounds/night. It was their Christmas special and we got vouchers for buffet breakfasts (normally 17.50 pounds), 25% off meals, free cake-and-sandwich tea, free champagne. Not only that, for Christmas eve and Christmas day the price would have gone down to 55 pounds/night! There's also a shuttle bus to Heathrow.

I'm not sure where you found rooms at the Sofitel for $147. The cheapest I saw on their web site was 190 pounds, which is about $300 Canadian

I got the rates from their website. I just double checked and they offer a Classic Queen advance purchase ( no cancel, no change) for $147.09 and the same but with ability to cancel within 3 days for $175.

You're right about the rate. Unfortunately, that rate is not available on the dates we need, as far as I can tell.

This hotel is not far from T5, it's not in the same category as the Sofitel however.
