Hotel with pool in Rome
We will be in Rome in August and still haven't settled on a hotel. While we do have reservations at the Forum, I would like to stay at a hotel with a pool but my husband wants to stay within walking distance to all the sights. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for a hotel with a pool as close to the center of Rome as possible? I do so appreciate all of your help!

There is a brand new hotel on Piazza Repubblica called, I think, the Esedra. It is very modern and chic, expensive, but has a pool. That is the most central hotel with a pool. The Parco di Principe, northeast of the Borghese Villa by the zoo has a pool as does the Aldrovani (sp?) Palace Hotel. It is on the northern edge of the Borghese. A bit further out are the Hilton and the Holiday Inn St. Peter's.

The only hotel I am aware of with an outdoor pool is the Calvaliari Hilton; however I don't think this is in a convenient location at all, and definitely not walking distance to the sights. There is also the Holiday Inn West, I don't know anything about this hotel, but it is even further out. According to a website I searched, the Jolly Hotel Midas and the Jolly Hotel Carpegna have pools; again I don't know anything about these hotels, and the locations don't seem real central. Take a look at http://www.bt-store.com/
IMO you are better off being able to walk to places, you won't use the pool that much unless you have children with you. Showers are always good to cool off before heading out for dinner. . . |
I'm always amused when people seem to know better than YOU do what you really want...Let's face it..if you want a POOL then you want a POOL.
The Parco dei Principei and the Alrdovandi Palace above both have very nice outdoor, in-ground pools (I've been in both of them) but both properties are located in Parioli next to the Borghese Gardens and I somehow doubt your husband, unfortunately, will think this is "within walking distance" of anything other than the Borghese Gallery. The Exedra is a very nice hotel..go to the Boscolo Hotels website www.boscolohotels.com to find out more There may be other hotels in Rome with a pool..someone here will let you know. BUT, I would start considering the decision of "having a pool" vs. "within walking distance"...you could always take a cab when you get tired of walking. Hope this helps. |
We also wanted a hotel with a pool and we were going to stay at the Sheraton Roma near the airport, but we changed our reservations to the Westin Excelsior in the city center (they did have an indoor pool). I am glad we did, because we never had time for a pool! Rome has so much to offer - you will be too busy.

Rome Cavalieri Hilton has a wonderful outdoor as well as indoor pool (fabulous spa, etc.). It is out of the way, overlooking the city (best view in town) but as far as I remember, they have a complimentary shuttle every 1/2 hour to the center of town. Very punctual and clean, air conditioned.

Do you want a pool, for serious swimming or just to sit in after a hot day on the town!
The de Russie has a hydropool |
I stayed at the Sheraton Roma (1994) and confessed to enjoying some relaxing afternoons by the poolside after hectic Rome sightseeing. They have a free shuttle service that every hour on the hour will bring guests to/from Piazza Venezia. The hotel breakfast was included and was fabulous. The hotel caters to business travelers and the facilities and service is tops.

thank you all for your responses. We do have children who would prefer a pool to Roman sights - imagine! We'll dangle the pool over the heads in order to get in the sights we want to see!

I just returned from Rome with my kids. It was miserably hot every day ( high 80s, low 90s) and it would have been a real plus to have a pool available. I would definitely try to book a hotel with pool that is as close to central Rome as possible. The Hilton is pretty far from the main sites,(at least a 15-20 minute drive to the historical center of Rome) and you may not feel like depending on the complimentary van to get you back and forth.
Good luck, and please post what you find! |

Just came back from Rome 2 weeks ago and spent 5 nights at the Jolly Hotel Carpegna. It was lovely and had a pool, which was really useful and refreshing after a hot day sightseeing. The rooms were very nice and the staff wonderful. It is close to Vatican City, but we took a taxi one morning to the Trevi Fountain and it was only around 6 euros.

What's wrong with this picture? |
MarkY - our children are wonderful travelers and very well behaved however they are children. As a 5 year old, would you rather look at the Pantheon or swim in a pool??
