Hotel Watzmann Berchtesgaden
 

I am looking for hotel accomodations in Berchtesgaden. I see many posts for the Hotel Watzmann. However my searches point me to Hotel Alpenhof. Are these the same? Any suggestions for this or other hotels in the area that you had pleasant experiences with.

Hotel Bavaria was a recommended hotel. We weren't dissapointed

Hi Lou,<BR>The Watzmann is located in downtown B'gaden. We have eaten at their restaurant many times. The rooms looked OK when we were able to see them.<BR>There are all kinds of choices in this area - do you want town,mountain, hillside, by the lake....will you have a car??

We've stayed at the Watzmann a number of times and fully enjoyed it. I refuse to pay over $100 a night for a hotel so I can't compare the Watzmann to what your higher standards might be. For the price, the Watzmann is a great deal: Nice, big, clean rooms with fluffy comforters. Nice location near the pedestrian only zone. Ample parking nearby. Fantastic breakfast buffet. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. No turn down service, no mints on the pillows, no computer hookups, no massage staff. The place is especially pretty when it starts to snow. And it is very quiet except for the church bells across the street.

Yes, it's called the Watzmann and it's right in town on Franziskanerplatz.If you want to stay in town, I would pick either the Watzmann or the Hotel Post or the Vier Jahrezeiten. If you want to stay at the Konigsee there are some nice hotels out there. Some are right in front of the boat landing and that area can get quite crowded. Some of the hotels are literally at the bottom of the Jenner and this can be a fun area to stay in as well. If you want to go way up the mountains there are a couple of nice hotels near the borders (grenz). What month are you going?<BR><BR>Have you looked at berchtesgadener-land.com? This site is a little tough but you might have fun with it..

We have stayed at the WATZMANN a few times and enjoyed it. The post above is correct. It is clean, good food, not fancy. You can walk down the street to the other hotel VIER J for dinner. <BR><BR>I have also stayed at the POST. It too is a good choice.<BR><BR>You may want to go to a book store and find the Karen Brown book GERMAN INNS AND ITINERARIES. I think she has the Watzmann in there and it will have a contact email, fax or phone number. The last time I stayed there was in 1997 so it may have changed names, but I doubt it.

Ok I give up. Based on comments it appears that the Watzmann is an ideal hotel. However, I have been unable to finf their website or any site that provides pictures, room, prices. Can anyone help?<BR><BR>We plan on traveling in mid to late May. Is this too early for the area?

In May, you are likely to have some cold temps. It's better at that time of year to stay in town...the driving up on the mountains may or may not be good. We were there a few years ago in June and it was rainy and cool most days - about 45-50 degress. There was still snow in the high alpine areas. We usually go in early September - when the weather for hiking is great. I have a &quot;gastgeber&quot; from this past August - this is a magazine put out by the local tourist office on hotels, inns, etc.<BR>Here's the info\:<BR>Hotel Watzmann<BR>Franziskanerplatz 2<BR>83471 Berchtesgaden<BR>Tel 0 86 52/20 55<BR>The hotel has 63 beds, 7 single rooms, 24 double rooms, 28 rooms with bath,WC and 3 appartment style rooms. I highly recommend Hotel Bavaria. We stayed there last December and have plans to stay there again in 2003. Our room was quiet, comfortable and nicely appointed and included a great breakfast. Each room is decorated differently - we stayed in the Himmelreich Suite. The hotel has a restaurant, sauna, steamroom, and whirlpool, and it's located within walking distance to the train station. The owners speak English and German. The cost at the time of our visit was about $77 for two adults including breakfast. Their web site is www.bavaria-hotel.de.

I just noticed that Melanie wrote a review of Hotel Bavaria. I thought I would drop a quick message to second her thoughts about Hotel Bavaria.<BR><BR>Everything she writes is true. I was also impressed when the hotel manager showed me a very thick binder full of dozens of letters of recommendations from past guests. The majority were Americans. <BR><BR>We stayed there in Septemnber for 3 nights. The Euro wasn't that great in September. We paid a bit more than the $77. Our cost was 108 Euro per night for a doubleroom.<BR><BR>They made me feel so comfortable there that one night after all of the other guests left the bar area, the dozen or so employees that work there invited me to their table and into their group. We must have sat there for 3 more hours drinking local beer and schnapps. <BR><BR>It was quite a night and that's what makes hotels special for me. The hospitality at Hotel bavaria is excellent. I will go back again.

I also very much enjoyed the Hotel Bavaria. A gree with all the comments above, and will add that while I can't remember the name of our room, it had a really great view of the Watzmann - not the hotel, the mountain.<BR><BR>I am a big fan of German food, but I found dinner at the Watzmann (the hotel, not the mountain) on the ordinary side.
