Don't know San Gallo but stay at Violino d'Oro and like it very much. Returning in September. Lisbona is just around the corner from Violino and I've not stayed there but it looks dreary as you walk by. Very interior, i.e. stuck between several buildings with no good looking exterior vistas. Violino d'Oro overlooks both a side canal and a small campo with a bridge. it's directly across the canal from the famed Bauer Grunerwald. Nice value. good location. Welcoming service. Only downside is fairly pedestrian breakfast.

I've stayed at the Lisbona and it's not at all dreary. On the contrary, rooms and ambience are very pleasant and the service is excellent. It serves a lovely buffet breakfast.
It is right on a canal and rooms on the canal side all have views. I was on the other side and at night I could hear the gondoliers singing. I would go back there any time.

Robdaddy, Violino d'Oro can be found on Veniceby.com. Sorry, I don't have their direct website but Veniceby.com has useful pix.

Panecott, who knew? Didn't mean to malign a nice hotel. Apparently I've only seen one side of it. I'll drop by and check it out when we're in Venice in Sept.

The direct website is http://www.violinodoro.com/UK/TheHotel.htm

I had this left in my bookmarks from my Venice research.
