Hotel suggestions in Troyes
Just starting this phase of the planning. We are spending one night in Troyes before heading to Paris in September. Any suggestions on nice, clean quiet hotels in town. 2 or 3 stars are in our budget. Thanks

Perhaps more than you want to spend, but we can heartily recommend Hotel de la Poste (www.hotel-de-la-poste,com) and several others on this site have as well. It is a Best Western Affilliate.
We generally stay in one-two starred hotels, but splurged on this one and it is one of our faves-after roughing it for several weeks their rooms are a superb self-indulgence. Right across the street from the big beautiful square and all the outside cafes. Do drop in at the exquisite patisserie across the street on Emile Zola street--to die for--and if you have a room facing them you can watch them make the pastries all night in the upstairs opposite! I have it all on film-it was great fun. I believe they have an Ibis, too, but it is not so near the old town. |
We stayed at a hotel near the train station (Blvd. Carnot) which is at the beginning of the old town. I believe that it was the Royal Hotel. The rooms were perfectly serviceable, the restaurant had an interesting menu, but we decided to eat in the old town--I recommend le Bistroquet for its charcuterie. You probably do not need to make reservations ahead of time.

Friends have raved about Le Champs de Oiseaux in Troyes. A quick check shows rooms ranging from E90 to E170, so this might be a splurge.

I too stayed at the Royal Hotel. It's just a few steps out the train station and to the right. It's on the edge of the old town. Just a few minutes walk and I was in the heart of the city.
www.royal-hotel-troyes.com The couple running the hotel were very personable and helpful. They both spoke excellent English, as I recall he studied in the US at Cambridge for awhile. Yet they let me practice my French with them too. I found their dining room excellent. I enjoyed my first night there so much, I went back the second night. The veal kidneys in black mustard sauce were exquisite. I really enjoyed Troyes. Several interesting museums to see and 5 or 6 churches. I didn't make it into all the churches, they aren't open all the time. If you really want to see them all you'll need to coordinate with the tourist office. The tourist office is conveniently located just outside the train station on the right as you head to the Royal Hotel. |
Lori, am not sure of your budget as 3 star prices in Paris can often equate to 4 star prices in the regions. At any rate, we spent three nights last fall at Le Champ des Oiseux in Troyes and absolutely loved it. It's a **** property, but excellent value for the price. It's charming beyond words - a redo of several medieval half-timbered buildings. Each room is different, and our mattress was the absolute best we'd ever encountered in a hotel. The public rooms and the courtyards are great. Rates currently are €95 - €145 (up to €180 for an appartment). There's a newly restored property next door under the same management called La Maison de Rhodes. Either would be an absolute treat if your budget can handle it. You can link to both hotels from this site:
