Hotel suggestions in Rome and Positano
 

Staying in Rome and Positano, Italy for 10 days during mid-March the upcoming year for my honeymoon and this will be mine and my fiances first trip to Italy. Looking for hotel suggestions for a nice but not incredibly expensive hotel that is in a good location for seeing the sights - we are planning to be out and about most of the time and really only care about having a nice comfy place to sleep at night but don't need all the bells and whistles of a 5-star hotel. Mainly focused on being easily able to get onto public transportation or walk to get to the token sites while we are there. Hoping to stay under or around $125 American dollars a night. Any suggestions??

I would check the historic weather data for March in Positano. That might not be an ideal time to visit, and though you can never predict the weather, you can be armed with probability.

OK - in either place $125 per night - or about $100 euros is definitely a strict budget property. (A 5* would be in the range of $600 and up.) I would start looking at discount sights now - or search this board for budget hotel recos that are fairly near the historic center of Rome.

In mid March the weather in Rome should be fine for touring - pleasantly cool - but I would not do Positano - many hotels and rests still closed for the season and ferries running on limited schedules when they run at all. Perhaps you will find a beach resort in off season romantic - but I would look at another city - Florence? - where there is plenty to do if the weather is chilly/rainy.

Sorry I can;t make specific hotel recos but that is not our price point.

If you want a "nice" hotel you need to double your budget.

If you do decide on the Amalfi coast, check out the other towns. You don't have to stay in Positano (a luxury locale if ever there was one) to have a wonderful time. There are lots of lovely small b&bs along the coast.

Where are you willing to compromise? Elevator? En suite bath? Space? Comfort?

I think it's a prejudice to debunk that the most expensive hotels are supposed to be the most beautiful ones. Usually a beautiful experience of stay is easier to do in the family-run boutique hotel or where the staff goes above and beyond to make you feel at home. No need to have high prices. Congratulations for the places you chose: the Amalfi Coast is one of my favorite places in Italy and I am confident that it will leave a beautiful memory.
I suggest you look at the site of the Villa Oriana Relais http://www.villaoriana.it, a very romantic small B & B run by the family D'Esposito. In addition to the scent of lemons and the taste of limoncello you will bring back the memory of the warm Southern hospitality!

As for Roma I recommend you Abitart Hotel http://www.abitarthotel.com. It is close to metro (subway) Pyramid and allows you to visit the city center during the day and stay in the most sparkling area of the capital at night. Indeed at testaccio / ostiense you can find the most trendy restaurants and cafes. They have themed suites and devoted to different artistic movements, but I suggest you should look up at the website, interiors are really fascinating. Have a good trip!
