Hotel suggestions in Amsterdam
Does someone have a suggestion for a hotel or B&B close to the Rijksmuseum but on or with a canal view? The main reason for the trip will be museums but I would like to have the Amsterdam atmosphere, if it is possible. I don't mind paying 3-4 star rates, but not 5, if that makes sense. Thank you.

You will have "the atmosphere" in many places (I am not going into your definition of what that atmosphere has to be) but the question also is are you willing to take very convenient public transport to and from the Rijks, Van Gogh, etc., museums, or are you insisting on being within close walking distance?

Okay, sorry...One room for two of us. 350-400 euro, tops. Dukey, in London we stayed at The Montague on the Gardens, across the street from the British Museum, and I could get a "fix" when I wanted. That is kind of ideal for me. But, if I have to take transportation, I can and will. ;-)

Unlike the British Museum you have to pay for the Rijksmuseum, so getting your fix in small doses could be expensive, unless you plan on enough visits to it, and other museums to make a museum card worthwhile.
There are plenty of suggestions for hotels in different threads.
Amsterdam is very walkable, so you could stay on a canal and walk to the museums if you don't want to use the trams.
Have a look at booking.com and come back with hotels which appeal and see if anyone else has stayed there.

What you might want to do is go to Googlemaps or even Tripadvisor and LOOK at a map of the Rijks vicinity; there are several hotels within easy walking distance. One of the closest hotels the Museumhotel is actually within sight of the Rijks and I stayed in the place back in the 1970's on my first visit. BUT I would look at reviews on tripAdvisor or on Booking.com of any hotel before I booked. My old place isn't what it used to be (and I don't travel at that level any longer) so be careful.
In fact, if you go to Booking.com and put in "hotel near Rijksmuseum" and the dates you'll get some choices.
You might want to see what's available and then ask about specific places.
Places I prefer such as the Crowne Plaza, Europa, and the Amstel are simply too far to walk for someone who wants to be closer to the three big museums.

I always recommend the Hotel Ambassade, on the Herengracht canal, because it may well be my favorite hotel I've stayed in, but its website says it is 15 minutes from the Museumplein. I do think you're going to have to decide whether proximity to the big museums, or a more charming location, is more important to you.
FWIW, I'd enjoy a 15 minute walk through Amsterdam to the Museumplein, which, as I recall, is a large and grand area but not charming.

I think that does sum it up. I stayed in Museumplein and it was a pleasant area, but I was just in a cheap B&B so wasn't expected grand views no matter where I was. But the place itself certainly was very Dutch by the way it was run, the breakfast, the owners, etc.

I would love to stay in the Conservatorium hotel, it's says from 350. Perfect location for the museums, and I've heard great things about it but haven't been yet.
Jan Luyken is a less expensive hotel nearby, also well located for the museums. It's some years since we stayed there though, don't know if it still any good.

Wow! You all are helpful! Here is my problem: When I look at maps on Trip Advisor or even Google Earth, I have a hard time fathoming the distance. For example, The Andaz and the Ambassade *look* far away, but if it is only a 15 minute walk, well, that is okay. Charm and a short walk is good. And at 17.50 euro, I guess I will have to get my fix in one day...;-)
