The Park is nice and (if I remember right) within that price range. It is right next to the Riks and Van Gogh and has a decent rist. And the KLM shuttle stops there too. M.

I just looked up the Park, which looks very nice and is 4-star, but it might be over the stated price range... We stayed at the AMS Terdam Hotel (which is a Best Western, but you wouldn't know it)in March 2001, due to winning a SkyAuction bid. We had a package, but I found a site with prices to give you an idea, and it seems closer to your price range. We really liked the location, as it was near the Vondelpark on one side, and the 2 museums you mentioned on the other side, all walking distance. Also near a boarding area for the canal cruises, a tourist office window, in the Leidseplein area (lots of restaurants, cinema, etc). I was very glad we did not end up by the Dam Square, as that was much more crowded and less attractive an area. I have pasted a brochure extract for you...The Best Western AMS Hotel Terdam is located in a quiet side-street off Leidseplein, with the city, theatre, casino, cinemas, countless restaurants, bars and discos just a stone's throw away. The historical city centre with its canals, the Leidsestraat with numerous shops and the famous museums are all within walking distance, as are the Vondelpärk and the Concert Hall. The Best Western AMS Hotel Terdam is easy to reach by car or by public transport. By tram or taxi from the central railway station in about 15 minutes, or with KLM shuttle service from Schiphol airport in 30 minutes almost in front of the hotel. There is plenty of parking space in the street or in a large underground car park only 100 meters away. All 90 rooms have bath or shower, radio, cable and Pay-Per-View television and direct-dial telephone. The hotel offers two elevators, a cozy bar, a lounge and a meeting room for five to 20 persons.
(from 1 January 2002 Tourist Tax will be charged at 5%)
Tesselschadestraat 23, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1054 ET
+31 (0) 20 612 68 76
Fax: +31 (0) 20 683 83 13
http://www.hotels-holland.com/amsterdam/terdam.htm
Double standard : NLG 310
Double deluxe : NLG 340
Double superior : NLG 420
I stayed at The Westroopa in Leidseplein, right near Vondelpark. It was nice, and you can walk to the musuems and the Heineken Brewery.

We stayed at Hotel Agora in March. You can do a search for agora to find my lonegr comments. But, briefly, it is simple, central and safe. A canal view double with bathroom ensuite was about $126 USD. The staff is great!!!
http://www.hotelagora.nl/

Sheila

Check out the reviews on The Hotel Washington in the rant and raves section. We loved it! In the museum district and lovely neighborhood and tram stop is 1 block away. Have a great time!

Once you've narrowed down your hotel search toa few (or if you're flexible with dates), go to http://www.medialink.nl/amsterdam/
Out of curiosity I did a search for the 5 star Krasnyapolsky (spelling) which was listed for 600 NLG; however, for weekends in October a 269 NLG rate popped up; they automatically search for special rates. Good Luck!
