As you can guess, New Year's is a very busy time for budget places in Amsterdam. You might want to try to following places:

Hotel Agora (Budget/Moderate)
Singel 462 (at Koningsplein)
1017 AW Amsterdam
020/627-2200 phone
020/627-2202 fax
home.worldonline.nl/~agora
[email protected] - email
I became very fond of this small hotel. Not only was the location perfect (1 block from the Flower Market, 1 block from the Spui and 5 mins. to Leidseplein) but I had a television, phone and breakfast was included. The staff was particularly helpful and kind particularly on the day I had to leave at 6:30 am. They did all the paperwork the evening before, arranged for a cab to be waiting downstairs and left me a breakfast tray at my door. This 16 room hotel (no elevator) is a canal house, but was decorated rather eclecticly. As a reminder: I had a room facing the back, the rooms overlooking the canal (the front of the hotel) are very noisy.

Hotel Acacia (Budget)
Lindengracht 251 (in the Jordaan)
1015 KH Amsterdam
020/622-1460 phone
020/638-0748 fax
[email protected]
I had read so much about this small family run place and was very happy with it since it was in an area that I had never stayed before. The Jordaan has some terrific cafes, brown bars and shops. Very basic rooms but very clean and well run by a husband and wife team. P.S. Very steep stairs.

Hotel Uptown (Budget)
Korte Leidsedswarsstraat 147
1017 PZ Amsterdam
020/428-3125 phone
020/428-3105 fax
hoteluptown.com or [email protected]
This place turned out to be a surprise and a bit of a lifesaver since I needed a room on such short notice. Even though its near the Leidseplein, its far enough away that you dont get the crowds/noise. Also its above a great coffee shop called Rookies where I met a lot of fun people during this trip.

Good luck!
