Hotel Steinbock or Residence Grindelwald; Hotel Staubbach or Silberhorn - Lauterbrunnen; Hotel Derby or Lotschberg - Interlaken

We are a family : 2 adults and 3 young kids (ages 5-9). We have 4 nights in Bernese Oberland. We would like to stay maybe 2 nights in Interlaken and 2 nights in Grindelwald (or maybe all 4 in Lauterbrunnen since it seems to be more centrally located). We would like to visit the lake areas near Interlaken, but also hike and see lots of cows etc. in the Alps. These are the hotels I have checked out and gotten reasonable offers from (some are charging too much $$ for three kids). Anyone have any advice on these hotels ( or other recommendations). We did check out the Gletschergarten, but it was too much $$(We are willing to spend about $150-200 US dollars per night. Our top priorities are location and comfortable beds (my husband has a bit of a back problem). Thank you!

I don't know the hotels, but I would heartily recommend staying all 4 nights in Lauterbrunnen. It is small, perfectly located and a hub for transportation. You can get to the major sights easily on beautiful trains and gondolas and will avoid the crowds of Interlaken as well as the crowds, (though smaller) of Grindelwald. You'll still be able to visit all three, but Lauterbrunnen will give your family a quiet respite at the end of the day and still be a beautiful place to stay.

McBetsy: Thanks for your feedback-the only negative thing I have heard about staying in Lauterbrunnen is that it gets quite congested with cars and people because so many excursions leave from there. But you seem to believe that it may be a relatively peaceful place to stay compared to Interlaken and Grindelwald. Any hotel suggestions? Thank you so much for your help.

I was off for a week, so I did not see your thread.

Well, my first recommendation is NOT to split up your time between Interlaken and another place. You will lose time with check in/out, packing/unpacking. Too much hassle IMO.

My second recommendation is NOT to stay in Interlaken. Although I think it is not bad (especially if you consider a trip to the lakes or Thun or Bern) I believe that you should spend all your four days in the mountains.

Lauterbrunnen is indeed the most centrally located village, a real hub. I have stayed there in the hotel Oberland. Although it was quite good I did not really like the location. The valley is very narrow and the "walls" to both sides are towering up some hundred meters. Somehow I felt locked in ... you know what I mean? It is also true that much traffic goes through Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg, where many folks change for the cable car to Murren. Noise was a problem in early morning for me.

However, others like e.g. Bob Brown like Lauterbrunnen very much. It is a matter of personal preferences I think.

In case you decide for Lauterbrunnen - the Silberhorn is supposed to be the best hotel in this village. The Staubbach is rather simple (but not a dump!). Should be cheaper.

Grindelwald is much larger and is located in a wide open valley, offering gorgeous views of the mountains too. Especially the Eiger with its north wall is amazing. I liked it more than Lauterbrunnen. Excellent connections to mountains and Interlaken too.

No idea about the Steinbock. The Residence is listed in a German travel company brochure (TUI) and I considered it once for a winter vacation. It looked quite nice. The rooms are small, though (except the Junior Suites). But those to the south have a balcony with spectacular views! As far as I know in the evening they offer a four-course dinner. Location is not very centrally - the railway station is 1 km away. The gondola station to First and the Pfingstegg cable car are very close, though, and the local bus stop is also nearby.

Hope this helps,

I have gone to Lauterbrunnen for 5 summers for a week or more at a time.
The Hotel Staubbach may come the closest to meeting your cost constraints for 5 people. The Hotel Crystal may be able to work out a way that all 5 of you can be in one room.
The Silberhorn is a 3-star hotel and probably the most expensive in Lauterbrunnen.

I suggest that you look all 3 of them up on the web and read the information posted there. You will see accurate prices among other information.

If your intent is to visit the mountains, there is little reason to stay in Interlaken. Lauterbrunnen is as stated on the floor of the valley where several transportation lines meet.
However, riding those contraptions is not cheap! By staying a week, I usually save a little money by buying the Swiss Card, which gives me 50% off all fares. But calculating the breakeven point for a 4 day visit might be a little tricky. It depends on how you arrive. The card I buy includes a free trip from the arrival point in Switzerland and a free ride out of the country, or to your departure point, e.g. the Zürich airport.
There is a web site that will give you details on transportation costs. It is located at http://www.jungfraubahn.ch/english/pages/SE/SE_KrTe.htm
The Hotel Crystal advertises a room with 5 beds for a price of 250 chf per night. However, if the room has a balcony, it is 10 chf more.
Breakfast is included. I have not eaten breakfast there, so I don't know about it. (I have eaten dinner in the restaurant and it is my pick of all of them in the village.) If you want information on the hotel look here: http://www.crystal-lauterbrunnen.ch/

The other sites found by search engines are so much junk. This is the hotel's own site and I presume it to be accurate and current.

The Staubbach is located at the south end of the businesses street (1) just before the road curves past the church. The Staubbach has a 5 bed room listed at 190 but with the caveat that children are 20 chf per person in the same room as the parents. So I am a little unclear as to how that would price out. Breakfast is included.

I have never gone in the hotel, so I cannot comment specifically.
I do know from general experience that most of the Swiss village hotels are of of acceptable quality.

As for the back problems, I don't know. Swiss beds have struck me as being something less than my own, but they are not mushy soft either.
The Silberhorn lists the double room at 160 chf per night; the family price is listed Auf Anfrage, which means ask.

I stay in an apartment, so my experience with these hotels is somewhat indirect.
