Hotel Staubbach
 

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Staubach in Lauterbrunnen and used it as a base for exploring the Valley and Mt. Peaks. How easy is it to get around the Lauterbrunnen Valley without a car. I am thinking about easy hikes, boat rides(?), enjoying nature, etc. Thanks

Chuck, I did a search on "Staubbach" and came up with 10 posts. I have not stayed at Hotel Staubbach but have read lots of good things about it here.

Haven't stayed at the Staubbach (believe it's a B&B type place), though you can see it's website at www.hotel.staubbach.ch (has English lang. option)<BR><BR>You can get around the valley without a car - most access points to elevated areas like Murren and Wengen aren't that far apart. Believe there's either train or post-bus service all along the valley. However, staying down in the valley could be like being caught in a trough - you should really consider staying in Wengen or Murren, they are great little villages, higher up, and with no cars. Plus you will already be "up" for doing some walks/hiking and won't have to take small train or gondola rides for that stretch from Lauterbrunnen every day. <BR><BR>Can recommend the Hotel Caprice in Wengen - may be a bit more expensive than the Staubbach, but it was worth it. Ref. boat rides - guess you mean more like river rafting; that should be available. There aren't any lakes right there, unless you head back toward Interlaken and the Lake of Thun.

I don't know about the Staubach itself, but I am familiar with Lauterbrunnen.<BR>The town is essentially a one street place with a few stores along the street with houses tucked away behind the store fronts.<BR><BR>The major reason I stay in Lauterbrunnen is its central location.<BR>I can get anywhere in the region quite easily from there. It is a transportation center, with a buses that leads to the end of the flat part of the valley, mountain trains to other places like M&uuml;rren and Wengen, regular trains to Interlaken and Grindelwald.<BR><BR>The Staubach is located at the south end of the main street, just north of the little church. Staubach Falls are visible a short distance away. The Jungfrau is easily within view, and the Weisse L&uuml;tschine river is just down the hill around a bend in the main valley road.<BR> <BR>I will be there for a week in September, which will be a repeat visit. I can hardly wait to get back. <BR>

Chuck,<BR><BR>My apologies for interrupting your post-- I have no information on this hotel, and I think Bob Brown is a better source for those who stay in Lauterbrunnen -- <BR><BR>Bob Brown -- what days in Sep will you be in Switzerland? I'll be arriving on 3 Sep & departing on 12 Sep. Though I won't be in the BO, it would be a shame to pass you in the airport or a train station without saying hello. We will arrive in Lauterbrunnen on September 8 from Paris. I plan to leave Gare de Lyon on the 7:44 for Bern and change in Bern for Interlaken Ost to continue to Lauterbrunnen. We will be in Lauterbrunnen from the 8th through the 14th before going to Munich and Heiligenblut in Austria.<BR><BR>I have eaten at some of the hotels in Lauterbrunnen, but never stayed overnight in any of them. There are quite a few things about Lauterbrunnen I don't know. There are houses where people live scattered along the valley floor at many places. I never have spent much time in Stechelberg either. We usually are there to take the cable lift up to M&uuml;rren and/or Gimmelwald.<BR><BR>I do know where the bakery is in Lauterbrunnen!! I usually go there first. <BR>And I can find the cheese shop, the meat market and the grocery store that sells canned goods and fresh fruits and vegetables.<BR>There is also a post office and a couple of banks toward the north end of town. <BR><BR>I just realized my typo in my first post that led to a bad error in grammar. Bus that leads ..<BR>or buses that lead .. I know better!!

Hello Chuck -- my apologies again for another interruption!<BR><BR>Bob Brown -- I guess we won't share a coffee or lunch this trip. I will be going from Montreux to Luzern on that day, and I have tickets for a chamber music concert in Luzern at 16.00. Your train arrives in Bern at 13.13, and I can't get to Luzern in time for the concert. Ironically, I bet I could do this if I were driving! If you are planning a trip to Switzerland in 2003 or 04, maybe you'll think about joining a gathering of folks in Switzerland? No idea yet if it'll be a summer 2003 or winter 2003/04 trip, but I'd like to meet some of these great folks.<BR><BR>Chuck- let us know if you've decided on the Staubach, and let us know how much you like it!<BR><BR>s

Chuck -- my final transgression, I hope. <BR><BR>Bob -- I did the train schedule on the wrong day. Using the correct day, your train arrives Bern at 12.29 and departs at 13.36, right? I can get there at 12.13 from Montreux and depart at 13.43 for Luzern (arriving an hour before the concert). E-mail me or maybe start another thread if you'd like to meet for lunch. <BR><BR>s

Chuck<BR>We stayed at Hotel Staubbach in Sept. 2000 and would definitely stay there again. Had a room facing Staubbach Falls. The tub was huge! No TV or phone in the room, but who cares. B'fast was served downstairs and consisted mainly of breads, cheese, meats, granola cereals, coffee and juices. Very enjoyable surroundings. Not too far from the train station. Only down side (if you can call it that), is the little church rings the bells early in the morning - earlier than i'm interested in waking. But now we look back on that memory fondly.
