Hotel Stadt Melk

My husband and I are going to Vienna in a few weeks and would like to take a side trip to Melk. One of the only hotels that seems to be open is Hotel Stadt Melk. Has anyone stayed here? Also is it worth the trip since a lot of things seem to close the end of October. Any advice would be great.

Thanks!

Yes and yes !
It has been 8 years ago but we did stay there and liked it. The owner is a real gentleman and even invited me to play tennis with his group the next day. Also, the food there is wonderful.
I have a photo somewhere in my online galleries on slowtrav.com if you care.

This place needs a good renovation- better places to stay- However-
Melk Abbey is well worth a visit.
November is not the best month to go as most tourists have made their visits and the town is very quiet - few Danube cruise boats on the river and few bike riders on the nice paths. The daily touristrs boats that ply the river Krems - Melk finish their season at the end of October.
If you plan to use a car to visit this area- look to stay in one of the many villages of the Wachau along the Danube and close to Melk-
a very nice place in Weissenkirchen-

Raffelsbergerhof

a beautiful old place ( 1500s )fine accomodations -well maintained good restaurants nearby as are many wineries and heurigers.

photos on website accurately show the quality of this small hotel

Thanks so much for the responses. I did look at the Raffelsbergerhof, but they close the end of October as do most other places. We weren't sure if we should find another side trip from Vienna because of everything shutting down. Everyone's tips have been wonderful. Thank you again!

We stayed here last summer, June 2007. It is quite dated but clean and comfortable. We got a room with a balcony that overlooked "main street" so it was really nice. But the best thing here was the half-board.... very inventive dishes at only €18/person for a 4-course meal. Like bobn said, the owner, Walter, is quite a gracious gentleman and really interesting to talk to.

There's another hotel across Stadt Melk...Hotel zur Poste, nicer and a bit upscale.
