Hotel Smeraldo-Rome??

Just one question. I have booked this hotel in Rome and was wondering if anyone has stayed there recently. They are no longer listed in Cheap Sleeps(someone said they once were). I was wondering why, and hope it is still an inexpensive and clean hotel alternative. Is it worth spending Lit. 140,000 more for the Due Torri?

Thank you,
Denise

My husband and I stayed at Smeraldo May 1998 and enjoyed it. We paid under $100. I'm not familiar with the other hotel you mentioned, but can only say Smeraldo is in an excellent location near the Campo dei Fiori. See my travel page, http://sites.netscape.net/monicapileggi/homepage, for my comments on the hotel.

I stayed there in 1998, as well. It was clean, simple, in a great location, with a small bar across the narrow alley-like street for a quick breakfast. No frills, but it suited us just fine. Good shower!

Thank you for your replies. Simple, clean with a good shower suits us just fine. Is the staff helpful?

Denise

Denise or other readers, I just booked a room at the Smeraldo for early March, 2001. The rate quoted, for a double, 2 beds, with bathroom, no breakfast, was L200,000.

I too was quoted 200,000 lire for this November for the same type of room as Leslie's. Leslie, please email me when you return! I'd be interested in knowing how you liked the place. Someone said it was being renovated (another posting).

We just returned from Italy. Stayed 2 nights at the Smeraldo. It is fine, and the price is right! They had renovated as the bathroom was newly tiled. Room was small, but clean. The front desk was not particulary friendly, but the hotel location is good - just a short walk from Piazza Argentina where there are buses & taxis. I had also spent one night at the Cesari (L340,000) which I liked, but don't know if it was worth the USD$70 extra dollars (which did include breakfast though). Hope this helps.
