Numerous choices
Budget buffet Rosenberger Markt Maysedengasse 2 ( sp, ? ) just behind the Sacher good choices in a buffet drinks somewhat expensive. www.rosenberger.cc Cafe Mozart at the corner by the Sacher - Albertinaplatz www.cafe-wien.at moderate priced fare in a cafe atmosphere. nice place even more so in summer with outdoor dining . Augustinerkeller Albertinaplatz - 2 minutes from the hotel mostly austrian specialties - wine not bad. not my favorite place but many like it keller atmosphere - probably better in winter as fewer bus tours visit. moderate prices. www.bitzinger.at Reinthalers Gluckgasse 5 5 minutes walk typical austrian beisl atmosphere - very busy midday with locals ( good sign ) fair priced good service - not fancy but good food for the moderate price. Just open weekdays currently I think - Bitzinger Würstl Stand just on the corner toward the State Opera - the same people of Augustinerkeller have a great Würstelstand- great choices - hard to walk by as the aroma is enough to make you hungry- great late night snack place . Many leave after the Opera and stop here too. Der Kuckuck More upscale - fine food - family owned - managed and fie food- not large friendly www.derkuckuck.at 5- 10 minutes walk general direction towards Stephansdom and to the right Of course the Sacher has various dining possibilities - higher priced generally - Himmelpfortgasse 15 depending on definition of moderate - excelent value for quality received- |
For very light meals, there's lebol ( www.lebol.at ). It's "inspired" by Le Pain Quotidien*, the popular Brussels-based chain of breakfast/snack spots. Very charming in some ways, but just like the Belgian original, the service can be good or it can drive you right up the wall.
*People sometimes say le bol is like a little bit of Paris in Vienna. Pffft. It's a little bit of BRUSSELS http://www.lepainquotidien.be/20ans20jaar/ |
We just returned from Vienna, Da Capo favorite down the street from St Stephens, very good Italian. It sounds sad, I know - but our favorite food for lunch was the sausage from vendor on the street, they put some mustard on the side, a few peppers, throw a cold roll at you and it is delicious. We did go to Sacher for the torte and coffee, I was not that impressed with the taste, and I felt like I was crammed in a sardine can. The hotel looked really elegant. Have a nice trip, it is truly a wonderful place to visit.
