Hotel reservation- send a check?

I have been asked to send a check for 30 euros by mail to one of the hotels we will be staying at in France. Perhaps a stupid question, but can I write a check for a non-USD amount? (I am in the States). If not, how do I go about doing this in some other manner?

Thanks for any help!

someone in france would write a check. you would need a bank draft which is a sort of special cheque.

It's been 10 years since I left the banking industry, but at that time it would have been very difficult for them to cash a check on a US bank. If they won't take a credit card # for a deposit, perhaps you could call AmEx and buy a couple of traveler's checks in €.

Or an International money order from the Post office

Most big banks can process a draft in euros for you for about $5.00.

Thanks everyone.

I will get in touch with the hotel and find out what they would like me to do. I appreciate the clarification!

Hi M,

Many people have reported on this board that they arrange to send a check in USD for the current rate (about $130/E) + $10.

The landlord then holds the check until you arrive. If you don't, they can cash the check and pay the fee with the excess amount.

Bank of America charges a whopping $35 for international wire transfers.

Go to your bank and they can draft a cashiers check for any denomination in any currency. All for a fee if course.
