Hotel Reservation Question-feeling a little nervous

Starting to get a little nervous that when i show up i may not have a room-what would you do?
I have made a reservation at a small hotel that only accepts 2 nights deposit by check mailed to them. I was not comfortable with this so they had agreed to take my credit card # instead of me sending in a check. They confirmed via email my reservation to the hotel on the dates i had chosen and which room i would have.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Should i sit back and re-confirm when the time gets closer?

While that can happen from time to time, there is not a whole lot you can do to prevent it. I would reconfirm the day before you leave, then make sure to bring the email print out with you. In the unlucky event they don't have a room for you, most hotels will find you an alternate. As upsetting as this could be, it is to your advantage to remain calm and polite to get the hotel to work with you. Mistakes can happen, but it is really not worth worrying about. Have fun!

Janice--
We could probably give you a better level of comfort (or discomfort) if we knew where, and when, you are going. I have personally never had any hotel, even the small ones in small cities, fail to have a room available when I made a reservation--whether paid in advance or just guaranteed with a deposit or credit card. You have a confirmation by e-mail, and in general that should give you some confidence; but let us know more about the place and perhaps we can make you feel better.

I forgot to add that if you are planning to arrive late to a hotel, say after 6 or so, it is vital to reconfirm as there are many hotels that will not hold your room even if they have taken a credit card number. Just make sure you tell them you will be arriving late and about what time, and to please hold the reservation in case there are any transportation delays.

Why are you feeling nervous? You have a confirmed reservation in writing even with a specific room. Maybe if it were some hotel notoriously known to not honor reservations or some country not tourist-friendly, I could understand. But, if that's it, I think it's just anxiety that if you don't have your room, it will be big trouble. I understand that, I worry sometimes myself but that's because I choose my hotels carefully based on location and what I want and don't want just any hotel. I don't reconfirm, but you can if you wish.

I'll tell you what I do to ease my anxiety--just take relevant documentation, and also take a list of 3-6 alternative hotel addresses and phone numbers you've selected from a guidebook as second choices, so if you really don't have a room, you are not without information and resources. I may be in your shoes now as I made a reservation by FAX to a hotel in May that was very important to me; they sent me a FAX saying it "confirmed" by room from my original query, but I hadn't given them my CC number yet. I did FAX it to them, repeating the info and calling it a confirmation, but I may followup just before I go to confirm because this particular hotel was supposedly fully booked with no availabilities according to the booking service they use (Utell), but when I contacted them directly they gave me a room. That makes me just a little nervous so I may reconfirm this time as it's a country where I don't know the language much at all.
