Hotel Reiter on Lido
We will be in Venice 12.11.2001 for 4 or 5 nights and haven't booked anything yet. Janice described the Reiter as a "hell pit." Can you be more specific Janice? Are the other Geat Hotels on Lido as poor a choice? After November 5, their room rates are very attractive.

I refer to it as a hell pit because the manager is the devil incarnate. Seriously, I was there December 1999, and our room was very dorm-like: cement block walls, tile floors etc. We were prepared to tough it out until my travel companion (350 lbs.+) sat down on his side of the bed (aka two cots pushed together) and the springs on the bottom hit the floor. No way he could sleep there. But we were still optimistic and cheery, and walked downstairs to ask for an upgraded room. And the manager (possibly the owner) went turbo on us - every insult I've heard in my life - sexist, racist, anti-US - the whole gamut. And I swear on my father's grave that we were very polite and courteous.
On a much much happier note, one block closer to the Santa Maria Elisabetta dock is a wonderful hotel: Hotel le Boulevard. It costs a tad more, but we had a wonderful room, were taken care of wonderfully (I had food poisoning one day and my mother couldn't have taken better care of me) If I can scare up an address/phone number/website, I'll post it. I simply can't say enough nice things about this place.

I am staying at the Villa Mabapa on the lido side. Does anyone know anything about this hotel. And can you give me a brief description of the Lido side?
We were originally supposed to stay outside of St. Marks' square, but then there was a problem with our hotel and the travel agent booked us on the lido side. Is it inconvenient to get over to the "mainland" and is there much to do on the Lido side?
Sorry for all the questions...just trying to get an idea of the surroundings.

Amy, I stayed in the Hotel on Lido that you are planning on staying . I thought the place was very nice and transportation to Venice was really conventient. You have to walk a block and the public transportation boats take you to Venice I think they come like every ten to fifteen minutes. I thought the hotel was somewhat overpriced, but we booked through a internet site and the rate card in the room gave a much cheaper price than we paid for, so you might want to call the hotel directly. And they will offer you a free trip to Murano, but is just a sales ploy, so if I were you I would skip it and explore Venice instead

Thank you Janice for sharing the details of your "hell pit" experience and thank you Richard for pointing me towards veniceinfo.it. I thought I had exhausted all the cyber leads. I would really rather stay in Venice proper, but the budget was rearing its ugly head.
