Hotel recommendations- Venice, Florence, Rome
 

Looking for some recommendations of where to stay for a couple nights in each of these cities. We have never been to any of them, so being close to everything is probably better because everything is new, although I'm looking into maybe staying near Accedemia in Venice, everything I've read for that area sounds great. Its our honeymoon, but we definetly don't need to stay in 5 star places everynight, we'd rather spend our money on tours, and great food. Something reasonable, in a safe area, and clean would be great recommendations. We are staying 2 nights at each location.

I picked up a Rick Steve's book on Italy this past weekend, and it has a lot of helpful suggestions. I am also going to Italy this year and staying in these same cities too, (in that order) so I will be following this thread.

Our AmEx travel agent has made some sugestions that we looked at and liked. Luna Hotel Baglioni in Venice, and Rocco Forte Hotel Savoy in Florence are two that she suggested, but we haven't booked anything yet and will be investigating more in the next couple weeks. I am an admitted hotel snob, but am willing to drop a couple stars for a trade off on activities.

I loved the *** Hotel Porteghesi in Rome where we paid under 200 euros this March (off season)for a suite (2 rooms and a bath--worth every euro in my opinion for the space). It is within walking distance of everything and has a lovely free breakfast on the rooftop garden (inside or out depending on the weather). The people are so kind, and they arrange airport transportation if you need it.

My husband is Italian--we were married in Italy. We spent our honeymoon in Venice at the Pensione Accademia, an old palazzo which used to be the Russian embassy with a beautiful garden and great staff. It's a three minute walk from the Accademia museum, can't recommend more highly. It's "our" hotel in Venice. Splurge on a deluxe room.

In Rome, we stay in Hotel Due Torre, great location on a small cup-de-sac between the Piazza Navona and the Tiber River. You can walk everywhere. It is charming, but not honeymoon romantic. If you can splurge, I would try the Hotel Raphael, very close by, a Relais and Chateaux hotel with beautiful rooftop terrace restaurant. You can choose between modern and traditional rooms. There is also Albergo del Senato.

In Florence, just a 15 minute walk above the centro is the incredible Torri di bellosguardo. I would recommend it even though it's less central. Florence is amazingly crowded and this is a luxurious refuge with beautiful pool just above the center. We are dying to stay there (one of my best friends was there last year).

Here's a second vote for Hotel Raphael in Rome. I have stayed there and it was lovely.

Without a specific budget from the OP it's hard to make useful recos - as can be seen by the range of hotels suggested.

Also - an idea of what you are looking for would be helpful, recognizing that most hotels in Italy are in older buildings with the characteristics one would expect.

nytraveler Under 200 euros a night, a place to lay our head every night and not feel worried about cleanliness or safety. A helpful staff for visiting tourists would be nice too.

Absolutely pointless to give recommendations without a budget.

Reasonable means nothing to me.

Someone above recommended a hotel where the rooms start at $800 a night.

Is that reasonable?

Any idiot can send you to Cipriani, but can you afford it?

In Venice, I can recommend Corte 1321 (http://www.corte1321.com/) in San Polo. Depending on the time of year you are going it may be a little over your budget, but it is in a very good location, close to the San Silvestro vaporetto stop, and nice courtyard for breakfast.

I strongly suggest you book a junior suite -- the other rooms are good for a single traveler but you'll be much more comfortable with two rooms (both modest size)and if you join Nozio, there are further discounts at many hotels (See the ad at the bottom of the Portoguesi page.
