Hotel recommendations in Vienna
We're looking for a hotel in Vienna for June.
Want to be in the city...walking distance to major sites. Want 4-5 star rating.... Any suggestions? Currently considering Hotel Konzerthaus MGallery & Linder Hotel AM Belvedere ..both suggested by friends. Would really like to hear from you...the experts!! Thanks, Judi |
Take a look at the Aldstadt hotel. My wife and I spent a week there two years ago and it was super. It is centrally situated and within easy walking to everything. Take a look at Trip Advisor and you will see many glowing reports. The price is reasonable by Viennese standards and it includes a great breakfast.

We stayed at the Marriott overlooking the river and loved it. It was in a good location too.

Hi; Just off the main square. behind the cathedral. Richard www.kvu.at

The hotels you mention are OK but slighty out of the exact city center. Best to take public transport to most places excepting the Belvedere Palace especially from the Lindner
The Lindner on Rennweg near to the Belvedere Palace The Konzerthaus closer in and not far from Schwartzenbergplatz and the Ringstrasse , the main boulevard of the city. The Konig von Ungarn mentioned above is a fine hotel and in the exact center for easy walking to most main sights . Also important near numerous resttaurants. Also in the very city center is the fine Kaiserin Elisabeth Hotel. This in a" vienna style" with excelent service www.kaiserinelisabeth.at Both of the above allow easy walking distance to many sights Above poster is mistaken about the Marriott. It is not near the river but on the Ringstrasse - typical chain hotel without character |
Maybe he is thinking of the Budapest Marriott..

I also recommend the Hotel Konig von Ungaren. Terrific location and excellent service, "vienna style" like the Kaiserin Elizabeth, which I don't know personally but it receives very good/excellent reviews as well.

Thanks everyone.
So it's between the Hotel Konzerthaus MGallery & several suggestions for the Hotel Koenig Von Ungarn. Comments, suggestions PLEASE!!!! THanks so much, Judi |
I would choose the Konig von Ungarn - small enough for personal service - perfect location incity center 100 meters from Stephansdom - better transport connections with U-1 , bus 1A nearby - fine selection of restaurants close by and only a very short walk to many major sigtseeing points via a pedestrian zone. Shopping, antique shops , art galleries close by .
Konzerthaus- less convenient 2 kilometers from Stephansdom and city center - a long walk to most tourist sights or by a transport ride - much larger 200 rooms plus - better business facilities if that matters |
We stayed at the Kaiserin Elisabeth ans had dinner at the Konig von Ungarn (sp?).
We preferred the smaller, more 'Viennese elegance' of the KE. We E-mailed th. KE directly for reservations, and they gave us a 10% discount when I asked. Best location for walking to central sites, and above an U-bahn station. |
I should clarify my post above.
the comments were regarding just the two hotels questioned. My opinion the Kaiserin Elisabeth , the more enjoyable of those mentioned. |
You can find many reviews of hotels you are considering on www.tripadvisor.com

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have made a reservation at the Konig von Ungarn ...after a few e mails regarding "smoking"...Michael the Concierge suggested that we reserve a room in the new section...(which he says where they try to put the "non smokers". So I think we are all set. Despite the fact that most of the time I do enjoy the luxuary & amenities of the modern hotels...it's seems appropriate to embrace the charm and history of Vienna in 'Viennese elegance. We're looking forward to our stay...thanks again for all your comments. Judi

Judi,
I think you will love it. The hotel's public rooms are not overly ornate--more evocative, I thought, of around 1900 Vienna. We were not in the new wing but the bedroom furnishings and the bathroom were immaculate and service outstanding. If you want to buy any traditional Austrian clothing, the hotel gave us a discount card for 15% off at Loden Plankl. I bought a gorgeous Geiger jacket and don't think I look too much like I'm trying to channel Maria from the Sound of Music. If you have time, explore the shops and restaurants on Wollzeile Strasse, one street over from the hotel. Have a great trip and please report back on your impressions. |
I will most definetly report back...Our visit to Vienna will be the end of our trip...we will first visit Dresden, Gorlitz (the birthplace of my late father), Berlin (birthplace of my late mother) and then Vienna. My visit to Gorlitz and Berlin will be both exciting as well as emotional...a lot of history has gone down!! But I felt it was about time that I visit my "roots"...my parents often talked about their visits to Vienna...thanks again..Judi

Where is the Konig von Ungarn? Havent heard of that one... There are some stunning hotels in Vienna - I would recommend The Ring which is right near the opera house and DO & CO design hotel which is a truly unique design hotel literally overlooking Stephansplatz where the cathedral is. You can see them both here: http://en.escapio.com/vienna-hotels.

The Konig von Ungarn is behind St. Stephen's Cathedral at 10 Schulerstrasse.
