Hotel recommendations in Trier

Can anyone recommend a hotel in Trier in mid-August? Husband will be spending the weekend there while working for 2 weeks in Frankfort.

I've never stayed right in town, which I think you'd prefer to do so that you don't have to drive/park for sightseeing/shopping?? It's a great town with lots to see and many wonderful restaurants.

I've always heard good things about zum Christophel, a small hotel: www.zumchristophel.de. They do speak English, although the site is in German.

Hopefully it won't be as hot as in the past few years, but if it is, in August you might want to look for a hotel with a/c. I wouldn't have dreamed of saying such a thing a decade ago, but there you go... I believe the Porta Nigra Hotel would work.

I stayed at the Romischer Kaiser in Trier a few years back and found it a very nice place with a good restaurant to boot. The usual good German buffet breakfast, included in the price. It's right around the corner from the Porta Nigra and close to shops, restaurants and banks. It would be a short cab ride or a 10 minute walk from the train station, if that's how your husband will be traveling.

We stayed in the Villa Hugel in June a few years ago. It was quite pleasant, a little outside the city but close enough to the centre of things. The only strange thing about it was that there was a little too much Christian imagery for our tastes (a strange wooden sculpture depicting Jesus on our bedside table, a statue in the park and a few other items).

We stayed at Cityhotel Primavera in July 2003. I don't remember much about it, so I guess it wasn't bad. I believe it doesn't have A/C, and may be a problem for mid-August. It was quite hot during our visit in July and it was uncomfortable sleeping at night.
