We stayed in the Hotel Bristol in Salzburg several years ago and were very happy with it.

Moderately priced $80-$125. Thanks Byrd. I'll check out the Bristol.

How many nights in each city and have you considered apartments?

We really liked the Hotel Austria in Vienna at which we stayed for six nights. It's a fairly small, family-owned hotel on a quiet side street within a block or two of the Schwedenplatz underground station on the northern Inner Ring, four or five streets from St Stephen's, and even a couple of streets from Shakespeare and Company if you need a bookstore with books in English. We somehow got on the hotel's newsletter mailing list and we quite enjoy reading it. I was able to find the link and here it is:

Hi N,

We very much liked http://www.ammoos.at/main.php?language=en&m=home%29

It is very close to a bus stop and about 15 min from downtown Salzburg.

Get the Salzburg card.

Enjoy your visit.

Your budget is not moderate, it is rather quite low at only 90E per night on the high end of your range. It may be difficult to stay right in Salzburg for that price but there are some hotels around the station that may work depending on the dates.

Check bookings.de for a good choice of 2 and 3 star hotels and inns with helpful reviews.

You can find numerous good places within your budget with a little looking.
I agree with the rcomenadation above by Ira for Ammoos.

Finepeople have it , clean with nice atmosphere and good buffet breakfast should be included with the price .
In that general area you also can find other similar places such as Haus Reichl.
Restaurants nearby and the bus into city center takes just a few minutes.
Just a short distance further out but in the general area of above

Blobergerhof
80 euro wit breakfast

nice place

In Vienna

Pension Kraml

www.pensionkraml.at

family pension well located easy walking distance to main sights , restaurants and shopping

Pension Nossek in the very city center on Graben a majotr pedestrian shopping street.
May just be a few euro over your budget but not much considering location and good breakfast too.

www.pension-nossek.at

also check Pension Suzanne - this a good place very close to the State Opera and perfect situation for city sightseeing.

websites from memory may not be correct -

You can also use this site and key in your budget numbers after you select your dates. Usually, no up front money, just pay when you get there. www.booking.com/vienna or www.booking.com/salzburg

Hello to everyone,
I was able to book my stays in Salzburg and Vienna from your suggestions and a couple of guide books. Thanks again for all the help.
