Hotel Recommendation in Rome please - Pantheon area.

We (Lou and I, agile 50 year olds) will be visiting Rome for three nights around 18th December this year, or maybe in the first two weeks of January. We’d appreciate hotel recommendations for areas around Piazza Navona / Pantheon (which I always confuse with the Parthenon, possibly leading to a very heavy fare on the taxi meter).

We’re thinking around 140 Euro a night, proximity to friendly bars is more important than fancy hotel breakfasts, and we’re OK with traffic noise. Noise is an essential part of the Roman experience for us – crowds roaring at Lions vs. Christians or Turin vs. AC Milan, or Vespa scooters honking.

I acknowledge that I’m being lazy posting this rather than venere dot comming it, but I’d appreciate advice from experienced Roman visitors – we’ve only spent a few nights there before, both times at the same hotel, near Trianon’s Market.

Peter,

You probably already know that the Piazza Navona/Pantheon area hotels are about 20% more than comparable hotels in other Rome neighborhoods (and worth EVERY PENNY for the desirable location, IMHO). In other words, 140E for a room in the area you want gets the same quality room as 115E would get you in other neighborhoods - again, a wise investment in my book.

That said and understood - here are a few hotels in the Piazza Navona/Pantheon area under 140E you should look at (in my personal order of preference, FWIW):

Bardo, thanks for this, and it certainly gives us some options to be looking at.

Cheers

Peter

These are just a bit off your desired location, but I think still worth considering.

Hotel Julia - www.hoteljulia.it - at that time of year, I think a very good bargain could be had, quite likely. I was very happy here, and never felt I was remote from anything. 1.1 km from the Pantheon (says Google Maps)

Hotel Parlamento - haven't stayed here, but popular with many posters, and quite likely to meet your rate requirement. (500m from the Pantheon)

You might check Albergo Santa Chiara, directly behind the Pantheon. Also Albergo Cesari, located on a street between the Pantheon and Navona. At that time of year, there are some great hotels prices IME.

Peter, I would rule out the Arenula. The location is fabulous, couldn't be better actually. But the room I had there in 2006 was depressing (although clean, I could say that). And the service was indifferent to rude. I'm going back to Rome soon but this time around when reserving a hotel, I didn't even consider it.

Second the recommendation of the Albergo Santa Chiara. Believe I paid €170 in late May for a newly renovated room (a/c, hardwood floors, shower, great bedding.) Would stay again without hesitation. Ideal location, too.

City House B&B is a few steps from the Pantheon. Off season, it should come in at less than your budget.
