Hotel recommendation in Bern please?
Hi, we will be in Bern, or there abouts, for 4 nights in March and would like a hotel for $100 or less (a little flexible) well located within walking distance ffrom sites and resonablyclose to the train station. Any personal experiences or recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Stephen

I've been interested to see what responses you might get to this query in the last day.

A bit of a tough price range for that city, I'd wager. Not many tourists overnight there. Principal traffic for hotels and such would be government officials and businessmen ... all with expense accounts of one sort or another of course.

Have you scouted out www.swisshotels.ch? It's the site of the Swiss Hotel Association. While not all-encompassing of Swiss hotels I'd wager 95% belong. Obviously not as good as personal recommendations, but at least it would give you an idea of what the market looks like.

What you won't find there, of course, are Swiss equivalents of B&Bs. Suggest you contact Bern's Tourist Office who is quite likely to be able to supply a list of same.

You might also consider stating outside Bern. Thun is about 30 minutes away by train and it's off-season there. Solothurn is a neat and historic city less than 30 minutes away. The Krone is a good 4-star with rates for a double with bath that start somewhat above USD100. The Roter Turm at 3-stars is somewhat lower in price. I don't know whether the Ambassador is still around. It was a modern hotel, probably two star, tiny rooms, but adequately furnished and adequately comfortable with a good price, which I now forget. It may be out of business, or may not belong to the SHA. Again, the local tourist office could provide more info.

Ed

hi stephen

(don't worry about my e-mail adress, i grow up in bern...)

i would try the following hotel: www.allegro-hotel.ch and then there's the website for the town of Bern (tourst part) www.berne.ch in english, there you can find a lot of different hotels. and where to eat and all the hip places. bern is a very nice town, and there are still some tourists who want to sleep there. exclude the japanese, they do switzerland in 1 1/2 day: 1 day interlaken and jungfraujoch, 20 minutes bern, 3 hours luzern and go back to the airport to reach the connecting flight to paris or....

have a nice stay in my home town!

christina
I cannot remember the name of the place we used. I will look it up at home and let you know later this evening. I do remember that it wasn't too much over $100 a little over 3 years ago, it was right next to the train station (great for early connections), and was very close to the sights. The rooms were small, but fairly new and nice, and it had a decent restaurant. Does this fit the bill? I think you will like staying in Bern at night. I found it a nice place for an evening stroll.

The hotel I mentioned is Hotel Wächter (a Mövenpick Hotel). The address is Neuengasse 44, 3011 Bern. Telephone 031-311-08-66. Fax 031-311-32-73. The hotel has 42 rooms. I think we spent $100 to $125 for one night. This was in late August of 1997.
