Hotel recommendation in Berlin - is Mitte a good area to stay?
Hi
We will be in Berlin mid Janury 2014 and are considering the Mitte area.
Would you recommend this as a good, interesting area to stay - and reasonably central to all major sights?
Any favourite hotels that are interesting/quirky and smaller and more personal - up to 150 Euro/night.
Look forward to any suggestions.
Thanks. Helen

Mitte is a big area..the most central would be
close to friedrichstrasse train station ( also metro)
I usually stay at Melia across the street ,but it is a big, four star chain hotel - not what you are looking for.
Berlin hotel rates are much lower than Paris, Rome ,Amsterdam. Etc....check booking.com
or Expedia.

Public transportation is so good that unless you are getting something truly outlying (great prices for those at www.hotels.de ) you will have a dynamic experience. One real classic is Pension Funk, which is a block from Kurfuerstendamm (a relic from pre-fall-of-wall-times when this was the heart of "West" Berlin). http://www.hotel-pensionfunk.de/inhalt/home/ Mitte is modern central, but can get sterile sometimes.

Danon & jelopez33 - thank you for your replies. We were originally looking at Arte Luise Kunsthotel which is less than 1km from the Melia but on the other side of the river.
dfourh - Pension Funk is my type of hotel!!!! Looks great on their website and gets pretty good reviews on TA & even before I did any research on Berlin I loved the sound of the word "Charlottenburg" (name of the part of Berlin where pension funk is located). I think this is the place I will be booking.
Many thanks.

P Funk is in a very good location in the west Berlin.
I have stayed twice in the area ...many restaurants , shops, metro , train station ( ZOO)
Bus 100 takes you all the way to the " east" , also Ubahn and Sbahn...
