Hotel Recommendation for Berlin

I just got back from a weekend in Berlin and I was very impressed with the hotel that we stayed in - so I wanted to pass along the info. My husband and I booked a room at the Park Plaza hotel through hoteldiscount.com for only $85.00 per night plus tax. It is a 4 star hotel and was a great deal. The hotel is located in what I believe is former East Berlin, so the area immediatly surrounding it isn't the nicest, but it is very close the Brandenberg Gate, the television tower, and Museum Island. It also has a train station right outside, so you can hop on a train to get the western areas like the Ku'dam in only about 15 minutes. The staff was VERY nice and helpful and the room was spotless, tasteful, and roomy. I just wanted to throw the report out there for those of you who may be headed for Berlin!

I just posted a question about hotels on another question last night. I will have to look this one up. Do they have parking, I will be arriving by car? Is there anything else near by, like restaurants, or will I need to get the train etc. to get to them?

Thanks

Pam,

They do have a secure parking garage. It cost us 15 DM per day, roughly $7.00 per day. I don't think they have their own website, but you can check them out at hoteldiscount.com (that's where I booked them and they have a pretty good description). I did not notice any restaurants immediately nearby, you might need to take the bus. At the front desk they sold us a one day pass that allowed for all bus, train, and tram rides until 3:00am for, I think, 8 DM per person. There are bus, tram, and train stops right outside. I think the reason that it has such a great rate is because it is not right next door to restuarants and such, but I found the value to be worth it. It is in former East Berlin, so like I said before, the area isn't as nice and built up as other areas of Berlin. To give you an idea on a map it was about a 4 or 5 minute drive from the Brandenberg Gate and Museum Island. Have a great trip to Berlin! I loved it and thought it was a great city!

Glad to hear things went so well in Berlin Shannon!
Another hotel suggestion for Pam - take a look at heckers-hotel.com. We spent a week there this spring (got the original recommendation right here on the forum - never would have found it otherwise...so many hotels in Berlin). We loved the place - fabulous location right off the Ku'damn...steps from both the S and U bahn stations...oodles of restaurants and shops. They've got a parking lot behind the hotel, but I'm not sure what the daily charge is. CAn't remember exactly what the room rate was -we had two rooms and ordered all sorts of food, booze, theater tickets, etc....and were delighted by how reasonable the final bill turned out to be - food and lodging seemed a real bargain in Berlin. Enjoy!

We were in Berlin in May and stayed at Hecker's Hotel. It was great! Wonderful room. The bathroom was great - with big shower as well as a huge tub, double sinks, makeup mirror, all marble. The hotel was very convenient and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay there again.

I considered Hecker's Hotel but for various reasons settled on a cool-sounding hotel just south of the Ku'damm called SORAT ART'OTEL, descriptions of which reminded me of the Hudson & Paramount in NYC. Has anybody stayed there or know anybody who has? Would like to be reassured I'm not making a mistake--or if I am, to know why. Danke!
