Hotel recommendation and Madrid construction in September

My husband and I will be in Madrid for 3 nights in early September and we are looking for a quiet (soundproofed) hotel in Old Madrid. We are currently looking at Room Mate Alicia, the Prado, the Plaza Major, and other moderate hotels. In my reading on the forum, it seems that there is ongoing construction throughout Madrid. Does anyone know where this work will be in the fall? Any other recommendations?

I don't know where Madrid construction will take place in the fall, but we enjoyed our stay at (and the location of) Hotel Preciados very much.

I wouldn't worry about it. The crews do not work on weekends unless it's something special, and they seldom work at night. The Hotel Prado should be quite. They should have the repaving completed before summer.

I just spent one night earlier this month at Hotel Prado. I had been a die-hard Hotel Plaza Mayor fan prior to this stay but got a great rate on the Hotel Prado and gave it a chance. I absolutely loved this place! I had a double room and it was very large, including the bathroom with lots of sink space and good amenities. The location was excellent, around the corner from the Plaza Santa Ana, and easy walking distance to the Plaza Mayor area. The people working the reception desk were very helpful and friendly. This is my Madrid hotel for future stays!

Cathy, did you have much street noise associated with Plaza Santa Ana? Also, I gather you liked the Prado better than Plaza Major. What did you find were the differences? They both get good recommendations from Maribel and on Tripadvisor. Thanks.

I can't really judge the street noise. I stayed in a room on the first floor overlooking the street on a Sunday (Easter) evening and the entire area was very quiet. It may be very different on a weekend. However, if you request a room on a higher level I wouldn't think it would be an issue - the windows were double glazed.

Comparing the Prado the the Hotel Plaza Mayor:
My first driving factor was price. I was able to get a double for single use at the Prado for 65 euros. At the Hotel Plaza Mayor a single was 70 euros - and the single is SMALL. So, I decided to try a new hotel for less money and a double room.
The next difference is the room: I have stayed in a double a the Hotel Plaza Mayor (they are generally 90-100 euros). My double room at the Prado was much nicer than the Hotel Plaza Mayor - much larger bathroom, more spacious bedroom & closet and the furnishings/linens/bathroom amenities were of a higher quality.
Less of a factor is the elevator. At the Hotel Plaza Mayor they have an elevator but you have to go up a 1/2 flight of stairs to reach it.
I do like the location of the Hotel Plaza Mayor as it's closer to La Latina area (my favorite hanging out spot) - but it's still less than a ten minute walk from Hotel Prado (which is closer to Huertas and Plaza Santa Ana).

I just want to echo Cathym's comments about the Hotel Prado. We stayed there last year and due to the positive experience (and great price!), I'll be staying again there this summer. In the past we have stayed at the Villa Real, also in this area, but for the difference in price I can't justify it. Our rooms looked to a side street and we didn't have any street noise issue.

CathyM, could you share some of the places in La Latina area that you like? Thanks!

Honestly, I don't even know the names of the places in La Latina that I like! I'm generally only there for one evening (my final night) and just head to the area and see what seems interesting depending on my mood. I usually bring maribel's guides along for this area as she has alot of good recs.

I just got back from my Spain trip. We stayed 3 nights at Hotel Acapulco, located 2 blocks from Grand Via station. The hotel is clean, on the 4th floor. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They did our laundry and even allowed us to use thier microwave.
