Hotel Ratings in Europe
Reading through the various travel guides for Europe I've noticed that hotels seem to be ranked by price only. Is there anything like AAA Guides or Mobile Travel Guides which provide a quality rating as well as providing an indication of quality? This would enable one to select a hotel based on a $/quality compromise.

Tom,
Almost every country in Europe rates their hotels by a star system, with 5 stars being at the top of the scale. A problem you may encounter is that there is no consistency between countries in their ratings. A four star hotel in Italy might only be considered two star in Switzerland, the land of hotelkeepers, for example. If you contact the national tourist offices, either by phone, mail or on line, you should be able to secure hotel listings that indicate the "star" ratings. Good luck!

The star ratings are not really indicators of
quality -- rather, an indicator of number and
type of services, rooms, & amenities a hotel has. You could have a really great 3-star hotel and a real dump, depending on a lot of things. However, youwill usually get better "quality" the higher you
go in the stars, on average. If you want to find
high quality two-star hotels, the star ratings won't
help much. Well, I don't know what kind of guide
books you're using, but all of the ones I've used
give comments on quality and, by definition, if they
do not extensively comment on quality, you should
assume they are recommending the place or it wouldn't be in the guidebook--this is what they
usually say. Fodor's, for example, has comments on
quality right here online and makes recommendations
for the ones it considers best. I don't know about
other countries, but for France you can get atleast
2 guides that rank hotels by quality: Michelin
and Gault-Millau.

a little bid of advise, always, always, ask in a polite way to see the room before you take it , even if you have made a reservatiton. They will not mind and it will be better for you to get what you wish and better for the hotel because is always better to have a happy guest.
Even 5 stars hotels might have a room you do not like, and the front desk clerk can almost always move you to a room you like more.
Good luck.

Good evening,Tom
Hotel classification can vary from country to country. Switzerland in their Swiss Hotel Guide have a very good description of what requirements must be met for each class. However here are a couple of web sites to surf, which will not only give you the price, but in most pictures and other information regarding the hotel.
Surf well:
http://www.swisshotels.ch/-----www.h...avel.com/-----
http://www.romantikhotels.com/-----w...tels.com/-----
http://www.slh.com/slh/-----www.trav...hotelguide.ch/
Good surfing.
