Hotel Pricing in Italy
 

We usually visit France and have decided to additionally spend three or four weeks in Italy next spring. The French hotels charge by the room. In looking at Italian hotels, I can't tell if they are by the room or per person. Obviously, it makes a BIG difference. Can any of you experienced people tell me how they are priced?

Usually by person. I booked a single last summer, and it was about 20 Euro less than a double. Every hotel I asked had different rates for single vs double. Sometimes if you spring for a suite, it is just a flat rate for the whole place.

Good question. The fact that a sinlge room is often smaller than a double could account for its lower price; but I suppose you could also say that means it is priced by the number of people, too.
Either way, when I have used either booking sites or been in direct contact with hotels I always look for/ask for what I want...either a single or double...so I never gave it much thought or had to worry about how it was priced...I simply got the price.

I travel a fair amount in Italy, and the only time the price is quoted per person is if you are taking half or full board. Otherwise a double room price is for 2 people with breakfast included...there is usually no extra charge for breakfast and usually no reduction for not having it, unlike France which usually charges for breakfast. When in dought, ask in your email.

While my experience is not extensive, it should clearly indicate whether prices are pp or for the room. Venere.com is a popular website for shopping accomodation in Italy. Prices are usually for a single, double, triple etc. Sometimes they offer a double room for single occupancy (more than single room, less than the same room for 2). Many if not most places include some sort of breakfast with room.

A Double room for Single use is less than double for 2 people, but more than a single room with a twin bed.

I sympathize. I have seen prices quoted pp double and double. You sometimes have to contact the hotel.
