Hotel pick in Venice
Do you have a great pick for a clean reasonable hotel in Venice? Fodor's book recommended La Residenza, which sounded great until I read rants about the cockroaches. (sigh). We liked the price category $100-150, but couldn't deal with the cockraches.

Would very much appreciate any suggestions. Thank you

We very much enjoyed the Lacondia Sturion. Has good location, nice rooms, good breakfast service. Only drawback is long flight of stair you have to climb up to hotel floors from street level. Do not know what current rates are like, it has been couple of years since we stayed there. However, see this link for the hotel info:

http://www.locandasturion.com/inglese/

By the way, I forgot to say that this hotel is spotless - you will not find any roaches here...

La Calcina was great, very clean, on the Giudecca Canal, quiet location within walking distance of everything. I think we paid $125 for our room. The rooms were quite roomy, by the way. It came highly recommended on this site.

I'm doing some research myself on Venice hotels. I did a search and found dozens of posts on this forum. Then I printed out the threads that looked interesting to me. You might want to try that.

We just stayed at Locanda Sturion in November, and would definitely recommend it. We paid about $110 night for a double, but that was during the low season. It was clean, people were helpful, and the breakfast room is charming. They don't take credit cards, so you have to pay cash. But we didn't have any trouble going to an ATM the last day so we didn't have to carry so much cash with us. The rate for cash was abut 5% better than for travellers checks. Also, the climb up to the fourth floor is steep. If you can't do steps, find another place.

Try Hotel Marin, www.hotelmarin.it It's a short walk from the train station, just off the Grand Canal and in a nice little area. Easy valparetto ride to anywhere and easy walk to anywhere. Reasonable prices, good breakfast, helpful staff, clean rooms.

Elle--
La Calcina and Locanda Sturion are good choices from my viewpoint. Another neat little hotel just around the corner from the Grand Canal (behind the Savoia & Jolanda, which faces it) is the Hotel Campiello. Room prices should be well within your budget, and the management seems to be very attentive.

Locanda Sturion was the nicest place I stayed during my trip to Germany, Italy, and Greece. I paid about $170 per night for a large Grand Canal-front room and it was wonderful. So was the staff. It's steps from the Rialto Bridge, but a whole lot more steps to get up to the hotel - no elevator. It was a small price to pay.
