Hotel or bed and breakfast in Venice
 

I am interested in finding a comfortable hotel or bed and breakfast in Venice for the middle of October. I'd like a good location within walking distance to all the major sights but we are open to any interesting neighborhood if it's not off the beaten path, breakfast included. We like to spend no more than $ 180. 00 a night per person but something less expensive would be great. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks natjgc

I used to walk past the locanda -sanbarnaba every day on my way to and from the language school in the nearby campo Santa Marherita and although I didn't go in, it's in a very convenient position, only "due passi" from the Ca Rezonnico vaporetto stop on the Grand canal but on a very quiet area away from the normal tourist crowd. Their prices, especially of you can get an offer, look great too.

I also like the position of the B&B recommended by four_maccas - I got lost round there one day and it looked like a fun area.

bob's recommendations are usually pretty spot on - if you can find one that suits you, I'd go for it.

Bob, I am so happy to see we have picked one of your favorites already for our upcoming stay next September. My goodness, you must know Venice well!

Thank you all for your great recommendations. I'm traveling with 3 other women and they
seem to want to be close to St. Marks square now. Can anyone recommend hotels in that area?

Have they been before?
Why do they think that near San Marco is best?
Do you have a budget range?
Would a 2 bedroom apartment be an option?

Even in October it is likely to be very busy in and around St Marks at least during the day.

As bob asks, why do they think they want to be close to St Mark's?

One of the girls really wants to stay there because she's been to Venice before and loves the area. I don't care where i stay but Im going with the majority. Has anyone heard of the hotel
Moresco in the Dorsodouro area? Is that area within walking distance to St marks square?
Bob, an apartment wouldn't be an option for us this trip..We are willing to spend up to 250.00 a night but less would be better. Thanks.

You really need a good map.
Venice is not that big---any of the hotels on my list would be within :20 of San Marco. Look at the Hotel Flora on my list for a location I like---5 minutes from San Marco.

Piazza San Marco is the area I avoid, that and the Rialto. Both of these areas get very crowded during the day.

I do like Dorsoduro, quieter but with sights to see. I particularly like the Peggy Guggenheim museum, formerly her home, and right on the Grand Canal.

And, as Bob says, all of Venice is walkable. Of course, you may get lost. But you can't get too lost; soon you'll come to some water. That's all part of the fun.

Don't know how this will go over with your opinionated friend.

Thanks we are going to meet tomorrow and talk about this. Id like to get it settled so we wont have to think about it anymore and its just 2 nights As long as it 's nice, clean with a good breakfast and located well, i'm fine with it,, When you go with women it is a little harder ...

natjgc - I haven't heard of the Hotel Moresco but it gets good reviews on google. it's not exactly close to San Marco but it's easy enough to get there from the hotel - according to google maps it's a 10 minute walk to the San Toma vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal, then you can either hop across to Sant'Angelo [one stop on the line 1 going towards the Rialto and Piazzale Roma followed by another 10 minute walk] OR [and this may be the better option] get the express Line 2 towards San Marco - two stops and you're there!

what you do NOT want to do, IMO, is to stay close to or in the Piazza San Marco - too noisy and too expensive. and the beauty of staying in Venice is that due to the vaporetti, nowhere is really very far from anywhere else.

The middle of October can present some challenges. High tides have been coming earlier, and you could be hit with one.

I understand perfectly why a tourist would want to stay near San Marco. I've been visiting Venice for almost 30 years, and I always love stepping into Piazza San Marco at all hours of the day. I hate the tacky cart vendors, but they're gone at night.

Because it sits so low, Piazza San Marco is not the place to be if high tide strikes, unless you want to experience that sort of tragic spectacle. The Vallaresso vaporetto stop closes when the water gets too high, which leaves the San Zaccaria stop the only stop to handle all the people who must or insist on traveling by boat in and out of San Marco. This is how I define mayhem. Even in decent weather, dealing with luggage at these two busy boat docks is NOT FUN, especially if the boats are packed.

Getting in and out of a hotel near San Marco with luggage can be an excruciating experience, especially if you need to use the two busiest docks. The two boat stops at San Marco are among the busiest, even in October, and the path to your hotel can be confusing and difficult to find if you have to walk through thousands of tourists or worse, deal with floods or rainy weather.

Life can be a little easier is you select a hotel nearer the Accademia Bridge (on either side) or further east of San Marco. Staying in a hotel that is just a short walk away from San Marco, especially if it utilizes a less busy boat dock, can save you a ton of misery. Finding a hotel close to a boat dock is also a much kinder experience.
