Hotel Options ? - Amsterdam
 

I will be solo in Amsterdam from 6/19-23 and need help choosing between the following:

Hotel Toren: single room, shower & toilet 115 Euros

Priceline recent accepted bids:
4* hotel at @$95 US/night - usually Marriott or Rennaiasance City Center or Crowne Plaza

5* hotel @$150/night - usually Sofitel at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 67

I stayed at the Toren in 1997 and was content with my canal view room.

Of course, I'm open to any other suggestions that you think I should consider.

I just got back from Amsterdam, and stayed in two different hotels. Check for my posting under "Hotel Report - London, Amsterdam, The Hague". If you don't mind staying a little out of the centre (in the museum district), consider "De Filosoof" hotel - lots of character, great breakfast, a 15 minute walk or 5 minute tram ride to city centre. I got a double room, with terrific decor, breakfast included, for 109 euros (mid-May). I also stayed at the Toro hotel (the other side of Vondelpark - closer to museums, same distance from city centre) for 149 euros a night. Wouldn't recommend it unless you're a garden lover (in which case I'd strongly recommend it).

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza City Centre last summer (twice) and liked it a lot. It is within walking distance from the train station, on the tram line, close to the canals, and had an indoor pool and sauna. Included breakfast too.

I will contact De Filosoof about any open rooms. Good to know that the Priceline options aren't the pits. Never used it for non US stays.

Turns out Hotel Toren isn't an option. The only open room has NO view. That canal view was one of the best features of the place.

Also turns out Hotel Brouwer is booked.

All in all I'd rather stay somewhere with local character or a canal view but the Priceline options may be too good to pass up.

On my first trip to A'dam I stayed a few nights at the Doelen. While I wasn't truly thrilled with the hotel generally, I did get a top floor room with an incredible view of the Amstel at a "last minute" price of 90 euro.
Make sure you get a double room and insist on the view - the singles, I hear, are like coffins.

Second Kate's recommendation of De Filosoof - we have stayed there lots of times. Great atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff. Rooms very reasonably priced; you can choose between a standard room (smallish) and a slightly more expensive but larger room. And the location is ideal, close to the Vondelpark and within walking distance of the museums. If you do stay there try and go a to nearby Indonesian restaurant called Kartika on the Overtoom to have a rijsttafel - small family place, excellent. (They even have a great vegetarian rijsttafel!)
