Hotel Oceania, San Francesco, Aberdeen or Santa Maria?

Here's the prices I've gotten for July 25 - 28, 2005:
Santa Maria - 165 (cash)
Aberdeen - 130
San Francesco - 125
Oceania - 138 (cash)

Should I check out the Smeraldo? Haven't been to Rome, so interested in your thoughts on these hotels. Thanks. (yes, I've looked at tripadvisor already)

I assume those prices are in Euro, not dollars?

Are those the "Rick Steves" discount rates? They are slightly higher than in the 2004 RS Rome book, which I have, but they might have gone up for 2005.

Sorry, yes they are in Euro. Those are the Rick Steves price quoted for the hotels. Any opinions?

Just returned from Rome. We stayed in the Hotel Lirico - same general area and would recommend it. It was 145 E /night

I spent two nights at Hotel Oceania in September and really liked it. Very gracious, nice-sized rooms and bathrooms, immaculately clean and tastefully decorated. Had air conditioning and TV. Staff was very friendly and helpful. And in a convenient location. I'd definitely stay there again.

Hi Nancy,
I would also check out the hotel's web-site or email/call them to verify rates. Many hotels have raised their rates as nonnafelice pointed out may be the case. During my search, I found some(none on your list, my budget is lower) to have been raised by as much as 30%.
In boca al lupo. (can you tell I've been practising my Italian ?? )

P.S: Thats an idiomatic expression for 'good luck'

We stayed at the Aberdeen and it was fine. Good location for the train station and walking. Clean rooms, but a bit tiny (at least ours was). Did you ask them for the Rick Steves' discount? We stayed there last Oct. and it seems that the room was about 100 Euro with an additional RS discount that you have to ask for.

The most important thing that I would be looking at is if the hotel has air conditioning as alot of them do not. That time of year can be VERY hot! My daughter and I stayed at the Aberdeen in January of this year(85 euros with Rick's mention) and loved it. We had a renovated corner room and it was quite big with a great bathroom, minbar, safe, etc. The location was perfect for traveling all over Rome. The thing with the Aberdeen is not only the free internet in their livingroom area on the main floor which was nice but their staff is unbelievable in terms of knowing things and helping you obtain tickets, directions, etc.I stay at a very upscale hotel once a week for work in Rome and personally like the area and the Aberdeen instead!

We stayed at Hotel Oceania this past June on our honeymoon and LOVED it. We are staying there again this May. Our room was spacious with a comfortable double bed, a minifridge, TV, GREAT AC, and a nice bathroom. It was very quiet and beautifully decorated! Breakfast was served by a maid in a special breakfast room and it consisted of various breads, cakes, pies - very nice. There is free internet access in the lobby and a room with sofas, books, and a plasma TV. There is a small one person elevator in the building (hotel is on the 3rd floor).

Thanks for the comments!! THe prices I listed were all directly from the hotels within the last two days via e-mail, asking for Rick Steves and cash discount.

I've booked the Oceania....now on to Perugia and the jazz festival.
