Hotel Norte Dame in Bayeux;WW2 beach tours..Chilcott B&B

Iam interested in info for the Hotel Notre Dame in Bayeux; if anyone has stayed there? I know there are tours to the WW2 beaches from Bayeux. Has anyone taken one and are they all day tours or 1/2 day? Also, would like info on Chilcott B&B....Thanx, Patty

Here goes: In June we (two couples traveling together) stayed at "Le Manoir au Pont Rouge" with Lt. Col. and Mrs. Chilcott (retired British military historian who gave us a ten-hour battlefield tour, including landing sites (other than Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, and the American Cemetery in Colleville sur Mer - we took ourselves to those) and little villages and crossroads where history was made. His detailed stories at the sites and explanations of how the terrain affected the battle were fascinating and not the usual touring one could do on one's own. But be forewarned: Alaistair Sawday's guide to B&Bs refers to him as "opinionated but tempered by gentle Mrs. Chilcott!" (she's terrific; SHE told us that one!) (and a previous post warned about "history from the British perspective") Conversation at breakfast was animated, and he held court from the head of the table. He does not suffer fools well nor, as he puts it, "people who think they know everything about the battle of Normandy through Hollywood..." We thoroughly enjoyed our stay (4 nights) but it helped to be sophisticatedly knowledgeable of history (and to be able to stay awake late to watch our assigned history videos!). We'd go back in a minute because we feel that we won him over. Comfortable, inexpensive, good breakfasts (porridge on request!). If I remember correctly, one guidebook refers to modern conveniences or something similar - bathrooms ok but not ultramodern). Seeing the Norman countryside and visiting the WWII sites is a very special trip. Any other questions, feel free to email me directly.

We stayed at Hotel Notre Dame last month. We enjoyed it- had a lovely view of the cathedral out our window. The food was very good- both breakfast and dinner are included. There is also the best bakery we have ever been to down the street, not the one across the street. The hotel is not fancy, but we felt it was a very good value for our money. <BR>We also stayed at a farm near St. Germain des Pres and the German cementary.which we very much enjoyed- See Karen Brown's book.
