Hotel near the Eagle's Nest
I'm visiting Berchtesgaden this July and want to stay near Lake Konigsee and the Eagle's Nest. Does anyone have any suggestions? Are the two locations within hiking distance of each other?
|
I don't know of places to stay in B'gaden but it is certainly close (15-20 miles) to Salzburg if that fits in your plans.
|
I'm actually just travelling by train and will only have a day and a half in Berchtesgaden, so I wanted to secure a prime location b/w Kehlsteinhaus and Konigsee.

We stayed at the Hotel Schiffmeister in Konigsee a few years ago. It's right on the lake. We had a very, very distant view of Eagle's Nest from our balcony.

There are busses from the train station to Koenigsee (and the hotels there) and to the Obersalzberg. To get from Koenigsee to the Obersalzberg you have to go via the Bahnhof.
At the Obersalzberg you have to change busses. The ones going up to the Kehlsteinhaus (aka Eagles's Nest to the Americans) are especially equipped for the steep grade and have special brakes (going down you will be glad they have those). The busses will take you to the tunnel which takes you to the base of the elevator which will take you - within the mountain) to the Kehlsteinhaus restaurant. I'm not sure if it is still required, but when I took the bus/elevator, you had to make reservations for the bus back to B'gdn. Allow 1 hour at the top of the Kehlstein Haus. Check http://bahn.de. Enter Berchtesgaden Bahnhof - Koenigsee, and Berchtesgaden Bahnhof - Obersalzberg for schedules. If you take the boat on the Chiemsee on a weekend, don't get off at St. Bartholomae, but stay on to the end of the run (Obersee) I have gotten stuck on St.B., waiting for over 1 hourgetting onto a boat back to Koenigsee. Most of the boats were nearly full coming back from Obersee. Incidentally, within walking distance of the village of Koenigsee is the Jennerbahn, a gondola skilift which takes you up to the restaurant near the top of the Jenner mountain. From the top, within walking distance from the restaurant, you have an almost as scenic panoramic view as from the Kehlsetin, and it is much less of a hassle. If you want to get some excercise, you can hike down from either the top of the gondola or the mid-way station. The hike from the top requires sturdy shoes. |
I seem to recall reading that just these days an Intercontinental Resort was opened exactly on Obersalzberg in closest proximity to the Eagle's nest. There was much debate about it, but they should be operative by now and their staff was trained to be capable of answering any questions regarding the history of that place.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Since I'm only going to have a day and a half in Berchtesgaden, would I even have time to do the boat tour of Konigsee and go up to Kehlsteinhaus?
|
Probably. We caught a fairly early boat on the Konigsee and got back around lunchtime which left us the whole afternoon. We didn't go up to Eagle's Nest, but I would imagine an afternoon would be plenty of time.
There's an American couple who run a small tour company out of Berchtesgaden (Berchtesgaden Mini-Bus tours). They have a tour that goes to Eagle's Nest. We took their Salzburg tour and it was great (small group-about 7 or 8 of us); I would highly recommend them if you wanted to do a tour. |

Knight ...let me guess ..you are from Fl?

You didn't say if you had a car....but here goes.
You can stay in the area around the Jenner cable car main station right next to the Koenigsee. Then, take the cable car to the half way point and then hike to the bus platz for the Kehlstein Eagle's Nest. Not a short walk, may be 1 hour. Or, you could stay at 1 of the hotels near the Bus platz and see the Eagle's Nest that way. The "zum Turken" is just a short walk to the bus platz. Tell us if you have a car. Whoops, I just saw your response about the train. From the train, then you could stay in either area and then take the bus or cable car to the other. Be sure to pick a clear day for the Eagle's Nest and for the Konigsee boat trips get there early! |
