Hotel Monge in Latin Quarter
 

There has been a lot of mention of Hotel Monge on this board. I have just spent five nights there with one night more before heading home. I have enjoyed staying here. As others have said, it is clean. My room is small, but not as small as some other rooms I have had in Paris. There has been adequate space in the armoire and nightstands. My room faces the street. Even with double paned windows it is noisy. Each night I listen to my book on ipod and fall asleep at some point still listening, so the street noise hasn't bothered me.

The bathroom is small -- the shower stall is small. It would be helpful if there was a shelf to put toiletries while showering, but there isn't. The water temperature is consistent and the shower is powerful.

Things they do not provide: tissues and a clock. I bought a box of tissues at the market. The toilet tissue is a bit like crepe paper.

The people working there have been efficient and somewhat friendly.

I've had breakfast there several times and it is okay. It is worth paying extra for the fresh OJ.

Rue Mouffetard is close by and I have enjoyed walking through there many times.

There are plenty of pharmacies and laundromats close by as well as boulangeries and just about anything else you might want. Of all my purchases I have spent the most at pharmacies. Voltarene, aka the Magic Cream, worked on my sprained ankle. By the third day of using it I can walk with no problem. I did not sprain my ankle on this trip, but months ago and am still living with it. I'm also using the cream on my knees and hips -- so far none of the usual aches from too much walking. I bought both the cream in a tube and in the pump version. My thanks to those of you on this board who recommended it.

Thanks for posting. I sent a girlfriend there this past summer on the recommendations here. She liked it very much. Her only negative was that the nearest metro stop was not on a main line, so required transfering more than some other places she'd stayed in the past.

I stayed there 3 times every time alone. When I had a street facing rooms (twice), bathroom small and shower stall tiny. The other time I had back side room with a bit of view of the arena behind the hotel, the room was somewhat larger and the bathroom was descent sized and with tub. So I think rooms really vary. You notice the hotel's one of the greatest things in hot seasons, that's air-con that really works. I usually request higher floor possible and on the street side because I like standing on the tiny balcony and look over the Monge street. Far away, you can even see a part of the Notre Dame.

Kappa, yes, the air-conditioning worked well. It was cool to cold while we were there, but I still used the air at night. My room was slightly larger than my friend's room, but I paid a bit more. With small rooms we were glad we reserved separate rooms. I think the hotel is a good value for a hotel in an expensive city. One thing I didn't mention before is the bedding. The pillows and linens were nice, but the mattress was too hard for me and I woke up a few times with an aching back. It sure was nice to sleep in my own bed last night.

I stayed at Hotel Monge 7 years ago. I'm glad to hear that it is still a good place to stay. I had a room that faced the arena (can't think of the name). Hopefully, I'll have a chance to go to Paris in the near future.
