Hotel Meson Castilla in Barcelona

We shall be six days in Barcelona in November
after reading the postings in Fodors and listening to Maribel we chose Meson Castilla ( Euro105 with buffet breakfast)
what do the experts in Barcelona think ?

We stayed here in Late May-early June and it was ok. Clean, decent-sized room, lovely breakfast room w/terrace, helpful desk personnel. Hotel is on a not-too-pretty side street but is only a short walk to Las Ramblas. We saw better locations on (and just off) Passeig de Gracia, so even though we had no problems at Meson Castilla, I don't think we'd stay there again. And the price (135 Euro w/breakfast) was not that big a bargain.

I also just stayed there this past July. Overall, I think it's good value, well-maintained and well-run, in a very convenient location. Still, I, too, would look for another place for the next trip.

Meson Castilla is more a place of faded glory than young or hip & chic, and the rooms, especially, reflect that. Our room was just as shlevine described: decent-sized, and the bathroom is up-to-date and well-stocked with soaps, etc. The a/c was excellent-- not so important in November, but definitely important in the warmer days. We had complete control, and it worked very well.

The public spaces such as the breakfast room are more attractive, and the breakfst buffet is pretty substantial. Of course, it's more than we usually have for breakfast, and since that is included in the price, it may be something to consider. Your price of 105 Euros, though, is considerably less than my summer 130/night and certainly seems like a very good price. I don't know how much better a price could be found in the Passeig de Gracia locations, though (which I would LOVE to stay on or near), since that seems more upscale; and the ones that are really far from the Ramblas would not be as convenient.

Unlike shlevine, I would not want to be directly on the Ramblas, and Meson Castilla's location is very convenient to the Ramblas and everywhere else. The street isn't all that pretty, but it does seem to be safe. We found the hotel personnel professional but, for the most part, aloof and not especially helpful.

Again, it goes to the question of value: it definitely is good value, a reasonable price for a convenient and well-maintained place, but it's not chic and it's got an air of datedness. The immediate surroundings are a little edgy, but not unsafe. It may not be the biggest bargain, but I do think it's fair pricing, and better-priced than many. So it's a recommendation with the caveat that you know what kind of place you're staying in.

I stayed there last October. I liked it very much as it is close to the Ramblas while not being right on it. It is close to where you pick up the City Tour Buses.

I liked the breakfast as well.

I paid 95 Euros for a single.

Thank you all, I guess we shall give it a try. November should be less expensive than October so it seems we are getting the same rate than
one two travel,....I have to reserve directly because we wish some flexibility and I do not with to pre pay. Thank you all again
