Hotel Lutetia in Paris

A travel agent is recommending the Lutetia on the left bank in Paris. Does anyone have any information/experience with this hotel?

Large, nice, great bar,a little farther away from the Seine and the Right Bank than I like to be,but a perfectly nice hotel.

I suggest avoiding this hotel. The facilties were fine (some of the bedrooms were like closets, though), but the service and attitude were awful. The concierge was very unhelpful and rude. I was robbed in the metro, and they made no effort to help me find an ATM or give me a cash advance. A member of our group had his bag stolen right in the lobby near the concierge, and all they could do was to deny liability. Pick a better hotel.

Spent a week there in 1997 and would go back. The breakfast was great. Our 1st room was a little disappointing - small with a view of the interior. I immediately asked if there was another room with a better room available, and they moved us to another, larger, nicer room with a street view. No problems with the staff at all.

Friends of mine stayed there a few years ago, and were seriously underwhelmed with it. They found it still on the shabby side, and also commented on the lousy service.

Too big! You may or may not have a good experience with the hotel itself (witness the mixed feedback you're receiving) but Lutetia is not what visiting Paris is all about IMHO. There are literally hundreds of lovely hotels in that area which have only 25-50 rooms, in which you will be recognized, treated well, and feel at home. Specifically I'm a fan of Hotel Verneuil, Hotel des Marroniers, Familia, Hotel des Grandes Hommes, Hotel du Pantheon - this board is a great source of hotel recommendations.

Your travel agent recommended Lutetia possibly because it IS large and lots of travel organizations/tours use it. Hotels in Paris are so numerous that not all travel agents are going to have comprehensive knowledge about them. Look around a little bit first... and have a wonderful trip!

Some of my family (two adults, 2 kids)
stayed there about 15 months ago.
All have traveled quite a bit, and usually in
the upper price ranges. The adults thought the Lutetia was good for a family: convenient location, sizeable rooms well above the Paris average, full range of services, plenty of kid-friendly, casual restaurants in the neighborhood, convenient to metro, etc. They felt that the staff and concierge were very helpful, helped them solve a problem or two.
It would not be their #1 choice for luxury nor for charm, but they felt it worked out well for the family.
Depends on what you are looking for.

I just returned from 6 nights at the Lutetia. I enjoyed the hotel a lot. We were given an upgrade upon check-in to a suite as well as a breakfast buffet upgrade. They have 2 places they serve breakfast. The concierge was very helpful. I prefer staying in a larger hotel, they generally have more services and the staff doesn't monitor your comings & goings so much. I would return there. They just opened a work out room and have a business center with computers.
