Hotel Krasnapolsky
 

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam? We can get a pretty good deal on a room so I'm wondering what the least expensive rooms there might be like?

It's five star (which might not mean so much these days), it's right on Dam Square - arguably the most convenient position, if it's cheap you can't really go wrong.

I stayed there. It is very nice, a great location. Very good breakfast I would stay there again.

My information is dated I am afraid. I stayed there for three nights about four years ago. It was wonderful - huge room, beautiful bathroom, tasteful decoration, very attractive common areas and, as m_kingdon states, very convenient (just a short stroll to the train station). I would definately stay there again.

I concur with others. You can not beat the location. It is arguably the best located hotel in Amsterdam. I have not stayed there, but it look quite nice when I passed by. I will say I had inquired and considered to stay at Hotel Krasnapolsky.I opted to stay instead down the road a piece at the Hotel de' Europe which was also a nice hotel.

The Krasnapolsky is a very large hotel, occupying more than 1 building. Its least-expensive rooms are not terribly nice: small and dark (fine for sleeping, but not really a place to lounge around for a morning). Several airlines (including KLM/NW) have contracts with the Krasnapolsky, and the least-desirable rooms typically go to airline crew and those others who pay the very lowest rates.

Some of the nicest rooms are in the annex, adjacent to the main building. A junior suite had a sitting room (nice for work or having an in-room meal), a bedroom, and a huge bathroom with a terrific shower.

The restaurants are so-so. The room with the lovely dome (the Winter Garden?) has wonderful atmosphere, but I've never had a great, or even very good, meal there. The Sunday buffet was very nice though.

For a top hotel in the same area, I much prefer the Sofitel Grand (its Cafe Roux is a terrific restaurant).

I can confirm Rizzuto's info - but perhaps out of date. When I stayed at a cheap rate a few years ago I got a room which was very much a single room which was simply dirty - coffee stains from a thrown cup all down the wall and so on. When I complained about the state of the room, I got a sorry and that was it as a feeble response. Shower with multiple jets was the only good thing. Having said that I think Amsterdam's 4-5 star hotels for the most part are pretty feeble. I stayed last month at the Barbizon Palace - OK but certainly nothing special and crap service for breakfast.
