Hotel Julian or Cloister Inn or other?

Looking for a place in central Prague (Old Town) . Must have a place with parking available. Centrally located in very important also since we only have 3 days. Planning of spending approx. $100 for a double. I had narrowed it down to Hotel Julian or Cloister Inn but have heard that Hotel Julian is not too centrally located - actually positive posts from one person. Any info. on either of these or other that would fit me? Thanks.

Linda, if you email both hotels directly, you can find out if parking is available.

The Cloister Inn is closer to the Charles Bridge and Karlova Street, but the Hotel Julian is not much further away. Both are in Praha 1. Since the Cloister Inn is in a secluded square, it might be a bit more quiet if the Hotel Julian doesn't have thermapane windows (I don't know if it does or it doesn't).

I appreciate your response. This will be my first trip to Prague. You seem knowledgeable - Do you know these places first hand? Do you have a recommendation of which of these places you would prefer or others( location is important because my friend is older and walking long distances might be a problem) that is convenient with parking? Thanks.

We stayed at the Cloister Inn for four nights and really enjoyed it. Nothing special, just a clean room, nice bathrooms and friendly staff. Location is right across from the police station and about 4 or 5 blocks from the main square. Seemed to be soem parkign around, although we didn't have a car. Some very narrow streets in that area though.

I didn't stay in either place. I stayed at Na Kampe 15 (The House at the Charles Bridge) in Mala Strana. If your friend is elderly, make sure that s/he wears flat shoes with a treaded sole (even sneakers), as the Charles Bridge is cobble-stoned as are many of the streets in Prague, and many of the sidewalks are made with tiles, both of which can be very slippery with a morning dew or in the rained. Don't bother driving in Prague. Keep the car parked and take the trams where necessary. If your friend has a problem with the hills, make sure that you take the tram to the Castle District instead of attempting to walk up the hill.

I know that the Cloister Inn has an elevator. I don't know if the Hotel Julian has one.

Thanks for your practical help. Do you recommend Na Kampe 15 - does it have parking or if you don't know do you have a website? Thanks.

I had a wonderful stay at Na Kampe 15, and it does have parking. The hotel is 50 meters from the Charles Bridge. However, it does not have elevators, and you will need to walk down 3 steps to the lobby from the street. The hotel is 3 stories tall. The first floor where the rooms are is about 12 steps. I stayed on that floor and had a very nice view of the Vlatva River and Charles Bridge. I used the booking agent Accommodations On Line (www.interacta.cz). If you want more information, you can do a search on Na Kampe 15 and find my prior descriptions of the hotel. This hotel only has one or two blow dryers, so if you need one, bring your own.

Linda, Just got back from Prague on the 31st of March. We stayed at the Hotel Julian. A wonderful hotel, great buffet breakfast each morning, coffe and pastries available during the morning, also. We were never around for the afternoon, or evening "happenings". But I think they will see to your ever need. Had a massage...called down and ask for one at about 6pm and had one at 7pm. Very nice place. Lots of public transportation very close. Enjoy!

Hi Linda,

My wife and I stayed at the Cloister Inn last year.

Our thoughts? A not very impressive, run of the mill hotel. Clean rooms and good to better service staff, but less than responsive management.

If stairs are an issue, please note; although the hotel has an elevator, the building is comprised of 'joining' multiple buildings that do require one to negotiate stairs depending upon your room assignment.

Several stairs up to the lobby from street level.

Our room was on the first floor, but we had to take the elevator up to the second floor, down three steps to a passage way, up three steps at the end, through a door and then down a flight of stairs to get to the room.

As for location, I would prefer to be as near the Charles Bridge as I could get - particularly if time was an issue.

A last note, a car is not an advantage in the city center, in fact a distraction because of limited parking. Public transportation is quite good, once you figure the system out.

Have fun.

Hi Linda
We stayed at the Cloister Inn in 1999, it was centrally located, relatively quiet and has parking (BE SURE to arrange parking in advance because space is limited.) Someone was not leaving on time and they gave us a hassle but we parked. In all honesty Prague is a walking town. Between limited parking, pedestrian areas, and one way streets you will want to park the car there and leave it. The Cloister Inn was about 4 blocks from a main Trolley station (I think). We walked there to take our second trip over to the Castle. We walked the first time but it is alot of uphill. Old Town is a predominantly pedestrian area. Everything was about a 15 to 20 minute walk from the Cloister (Jewish quarter, Wenselas square, Old Town, etc, with the exception of the Castle. I do not know how "older" your friend is. The oldest in our group was 59 and there was no problem. One of the most enjoyable elements was stopping at the cafes for people watching and a beer. 3 days should not be a problem for the main city. We spent one day touring the castle, then walking down to the lower square, across the bridge to Old town and the clock. That evening went to Wenselas square and the museum for a concert on the steps. Next day did the Jewish quarter and shopping. Be sure to walk (about 4 blocks from The Cloister to an area by the river to see the Castle lit at night it is really lovely.
Prague is a wonderful city (once we got rid of the car!!!)

Thanks for the practical help. I do appreciate it. I know the car will be a pain, but we need it for the rest of the trip. We do plan on parking it and leaving it while in Prague. Thanks again!

Hotel Julian is very very nice. I just stayed there and got back last night.
It is the only hotel i now stay at and have just come back from 7th trip to Prague in 3 years.

they have car parking, Just let them know you are taking car.
Parking is a problem at most hotels so that is good also.

If you would like any assistance let me know.
Staff is great.

We were at the Cloister Inn on 9/11. They were terrific. so was the small cafe at the corner. Our room was spacious with a sitting area and nice size bath. We could walk everywhere we wanted to go. We were on the third floor front, and slept soundly each night - no street traffic. Would return there in a heartbeat. Loved Prague!
