Hotel info. for London first-timer
 

We are traveling to London the end of May. The following hotels still have availability: Grosvenor Court hotel, Forte Posthouse Kensington, Thistle hotels' Bloomsbury Park,London Elizabeth,London South Kensignton apts.Certainly would appreciate any information on any of these. We are bringing my parents with us and want to make this a trip to remember! Also,if anyone has stayed at Forte Posthouse Kensington was the food okay; they are offering a special rate of 99p,which includes breakfast and dinner.Thanks!!

<BR>Gina, we stayed at the Grosvenor Court Hotel in Bayswater last September for 7 nights. <BR>We had a large twin sized room, large ensuite. It has recently been refurbished and was excellent value for our money. <BR>A continental breakfast was included, cereals, pastries and toast if you ask. <BR>Paddington Station is about 300 metres away, a laundrette to wash was close by. Another friend joined us for a day, her room was rather small, and the ensuite was tiny, but twin rooms seemed large in comparison. They can accommodate up to 4 or more apparently. <BR>Enjoy your trip. <BR>Kimerley

Gina: We stayed at the London Elizabeth Hotel last week and it was excellent. The Lancaster Gate tube station is about half a block away, and the hotel's Rose Garden restaurant is great for breakfast or dinner. We stayed in the Elizabeth Room, 443, which was nicely decorated and en-suite. The normal rate is 165 pounds per night, but they let us have the room for 125. Other good places to eat nearby are Whites Hotel Grill and the Swan Pub. Have fun! <BR>

This may or may not help you, but the Thistle hotel chain is offering a Dollars for Pounds program. The one across the street from Kensington Palace two blocks from Kensington High St tube is $169.00 per night including taxes and breakfast. Call them directly for all their rates.

I was in England about 5 years ago and stayed at a fabulous smaller hotel in London called 16 Sumner Place which is also the street address. It is a row of townhouses that in fact are one hotel. All the rooms are different but all beautifully decorated, some on a garden. We like it because it was less expensive although still expensive than the larger hotels and in our opinion had much more charm. We got the name of the hotel from some British tourists while we were staying in the countryside. The hotel can be hard to get into. There is nothing to indicate that it is a hotel. Breakfast is in your room with your chooice of newspaper..all very nice..good luck wherever you stay.. <BR>

I have also stayed at the London Elizabeth that jj mentioned and found it to be a good place. It is right outside the gates of Hyde Park, and it was nice, in the early morning, to just pop over for a quiet walk in the park...the Peter Pan statue is right nearby...and the serpentine. Tube station is right there also, and the staff was very nice. Our room was very small, though. Two weeks ago we had a room on the 24th floor overlooking Hyde Park at the London Hilton...incredible view. I know...you hate to go to London and stay in a Hilton, but we had a marvelous (LARGE!) suite and a terrific concierge. By the way...eat at Grieg's Grill in Mayfair on Berkley Square...fantastic steaks and a neat little place tucked away!

Just a note if you decided to go with the Posthouse Kensington B&D plan. When I called Forte hotels they told me that for an extra 5 pounds you could eat dinner in their other London hotels as well. You might want to check that out.
