Hotel in Zurich
 

Can you suggest a good hotel, moderately priced near the train station in Zurich?

You might consider Priceline--we got the Renaissance for around $88--located near airport though. Tram nearby will get you into city center in 10 minutes or so. This hotel is fairly new with nice rooms, great beds & linens, and has a pool. We regretted not adding on another night--would stay there again for sure.

What's "moderately priced"?

This time last year we stayed at the Hotel Alexander- it is in the old town, across the river from the railway station- about a 5-maximum 10 minute walk. A generous breakfast included in price, lots of restaurants etc on that street- the price then was around CHF120 per night for a twin Trotsky

You can often get the Marriott on Priceline..it is a 5-10 minute walk (all flat) from the train station and within sight of it.

Hotel Arlette, Stampfenbachstrasse 26, is on a quiet street about five minutes from the bahnhof. It has small rooms and compact baths, but is clean and neat, with an adequate continental breakfast and a friendly, helpful staff.

Another place to consider is Martahaus at Zahringerstrasse 36 in the old town about ten minutes from the bahnhof. It has a range of accommodations---singles, doubles, triples, and dormitory, with and without bath. ZZ

It is hard to make reccos without a more specific budget, as “moderately priced” and “Zurich” can often be a contradiction in terms. If you can provide a budget, you may get more useful reccos. But I mostly want to point out that Zurich has SEVEN train stations, three of which are located in or near the central area of Zurich. So you do not have to necessarily stay near the main train station, the Hauptbahnhof. It may be cheaper to stay elsewhere, not to mention somewhat more convenient. For example the Stadelhofen station is only about 100 yards from the lake and is just at the edge of the old town area on the left bank; making it quite convenient to stay in this area. I think this area is more interesting than the area around the main train station.

The Enge train station is on the east side of the lake, and would be a short walk to the lake, and quite convenient for getting to other spots in town. It is not near the old town (but really not a bad walk down the lake, and quite pretty), but is near some museums, good restaurants and a lovely cathedral. There is also good street tram service from this area.

The Weidikon train station is located further away from the lake and is probably not that convenient for the tourist, but hotels in the area would most likely be cheaper. The Alstetten station is even further north from this and I don’t think there are any hotels in the area, its more residential and light industrial. The Tiefenbrunnen station is further along the west side of the lake, and there are few if any hotels near it. Again, it is not so convenient for touring, IMO. But there is street tram service in all these areas so it is not out of the question to stay in any of them.

The last train station, Zurich Oerlikon, is really technically more of a suburb on the north east side close to the airport, and is not really that convenient for touring Zurich, IMO. However it is just one stop from the airport and there are hotels there if you want to consider it. I have to say it does not have a lot of charm, unlike the areas around the Hauptbahnhof, Stadelhofen and Enge stations.

There are one or more direct trains an hour to/from the airport from Stadelhofen, Enge, Alstetten and Tiefenbrunnen stations, and connecting service from Wiedkon. If you are coming in by train from another destination in Europe, check to see if these stations are a stop on the line on the way into the Hauptbahnhof. If not, you can switch trains in the Hauptbahnhof, or from the Hauptbahnhof you can take a street tram to a location close to your hotel.
