Hotel in Trier, Germany

O.K. Fodorite's, you did a great job of helping me decide on a hotel in Luzern, how about doing the same for Trier, Germany. <BR> <BR>It's just my wife and I. We will be there the very last day of May and the first couple of days of June. <BR> <BR> We plan to use Trier as a home base for 4 days and 3 nights. Right now, we have been looking at the Hotel Petrisberg. It is in the hills with a view of the city. <BR> <BR>Comments? How about restaurants and short day trips? Welcome any info. <BR> <BR>Dick

Check out Villa Hugel http://members.fortunecity.com/bavariaben/fzfrhine.html <BR>Scroll down. <BR> <BR>http://adserver.latimes.com/travel/d...000018805.html <BR> <BR>Also, check out http://www.moselhotel.com/index.html and scroll down to their English section (if you don't read German). They have some interesting info about wine fests, fireworks, etc.

Try Weinhaus Becker, up from the town center, near the university. We stayed there one night last May on our way from Belgium to the Rhine. Found the room basic, clean, and about $70 as I recall. The dining room featured excellent quisine, and seemed to be somewhat of a special occassion place for the locals, and a little pricey, IMO, but very good. Breakfast was just fine. They can be found at www.lodging-germany/trier/weinhausbecker/html, and currently show 140-150DM. We were just "passing through" as it were, so really did not look at a lot of other lodging alternatives. <BR>A short day trip could be over to Vianden in Luxembourg, site of one very beautiful castle, restored by the Lux government. Opens at 10am. The town of Vianden looks like a movie set. Stop at quaint little Echternacht for lunch in one of the cafe's in the small town square. On your way to or from Vianden, and depending on your time, take a little detour and enjoy that area of Luxembourg referred to as the "petitte suisse." It is a gorgeous drive through a very forestted area, almost a rain forest. Hope this helps.

I highly recommend Hotel Eurener Hof. We stayed there just a few months ago and found EVERYTHING about it fantastic. Trier was just a "sleep over" for us but after we got to Hotel Eurener Hof we were sorry we didn't stay there longer. <BR> <BR>The restaurant served one of the best meals we had on our lengthy trip; the room was HUGE by European standards (actually a foyer and two bedrooms); one room had a walk-out balcony/patio; there is a swimming pool and spa; we were greeted with a complimentary bottle of wine (that, by the way, tasted very good); it is nestled in a quiet neighborhood; and the breakfast buffet was HUGE and delicious. <BR> <BR>We could not believe we got all that for just over $100 for 3 people. <BR> <BR>We ate outside at their restaurant and had one of the best meals and evenings of our trip. <BR> <BR>Here's the pertinent information (I've listed the web site if you want to check them out): <BR> <BR>Hotel Eurener Hof <BR>Eurenerstrasse 171 <BR>54294 Trier <BR>Germany <BR>011 49 651 82400 <BR>Fax: 011 49 651 800 900 <BR>[email protected] <BR>www.eurener-hof.de

I stayed at the Hotel Romischer Kaiser right across from the Porta Negra in '98. At the time it cost about $90.00 for a single. The room was huge, the beds great. It is small with a locally known restaurant. The breakfast in the morning was huge and was included in with the room. I didn't find it to be loud, considering the proximity to the Porta Negra. The bathrooms were immaculate, but small considering the vastness of the room.

I have to agree with Betsy, the Romischer Kaiser was great. Depends on what you like I reckon. It sits at the end of a great square(?). Cobblestones, very clean, farmers market, great restaurants, bars and shopping. The hotel itself was one of the nicer (if not nicest)hotels Ive stayed in in Europe. Immaculate, lots of staind wood, glass elevator, great breakfast. Roman ruins just across the street. I'd stay there again. At the same time, we toured some castles along the Rhine and Mosel. I heard you could stay in some of them. That would be cool.

I stayed at the Romischer Kaiser in September. Our double room was immaculate and was 190DM. There was also secure parking available just down the alley. <BR> <BR>

Another vote for Villa Hugel. Large, well appointed rooms with balconies overlooking the City (you are up on a hill South of the City). Close to the Roman Ampitheatre and a short drive into the City Center and the Roman Baths. Beautiful Hotel and great location. Must sees in Trier are already listed here. I would do Mosel River Valley one day (although you could easily do two or three). Stops at Bernkastel, Zell, Cochem, and (for sure) Burg Elz, my favorite castle in Europe, would do it. The Mosel is what everyone wants the Rhine to be, peaceful, laidback (far less crowded than Rhine), romantic, great wine (generally, softer than Rhine) and good restaurants. Never had trouble parking in Trier or on the Mosel. Lots of opportunity to taste wines. Lovely part of the world.

Dick, you have to decide if you want to stay in town or merely visit there and stay on the outskirts. If the latter, you have several options, including staying in one of the Mosel wine villages, or at a hotel I like a lot, the Berghotel Kockelsberg. It sits above Trier in a wonderfully quiet location and has beautiful views of the town, esp. in the evening when the lights come up on all the monuments. It is 5 KM up the road towards Bitburg, near to the autobahn bypass and is easily found. I agree with a day trip to Vianden, which is the site of the largest feudal fortress on the continent, and the town to which one Victor Hugo was exiled. Charming. Echternach is also lovely, and there is a marvelous restaurant sited in a meadow on a hill overlooking the town on the German side of the border... you can take a short walk through the forest to the overlook after your meal, or before if you need to work up an appetite. Let me know if you'd like directions...

I have been trying to find a website for the Romischer Kaiser to inquire about rates and availability. Any suggestions? Will be in Trier in late April 2002. <BR>Thanks.
