Hotel in the Zurich, 8005 area?

Hello,

I'm looking for a decent 3 star minimum hotel in the 8005 area that is at a decent price. I've got a trip coming up to Zurich and have some meetings at the Walhalla there, but that is booked up.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

no personal experience, but you could look into:

X-Tra Hotel Limmat
Limmatstrasse 118, Zurich 8005

Reviewed on Tripadvisor, 2004:
"...Found on the web through Octopus. Got it for $77 U.S. dollars per night. Very cheap for Zurich. Basic room. Clean. Very nice tiled shared bathroom. Excellent breakfast included. Can walk from the train station. Friendly staff. Nice neighborhood with easy walking to the old, historic section of Zurich...."

BW Hotel Montana
Konradstrasse 39, Zurich 8005

Mixed reviews on Tripadvisor, mostly around 'decor' and potential seediness of area; very close to the train station

Seems like there was a nice hotel just across from the train station, but on the opposite side of Walhalla; beginning of Bahnhofstrasse? Would that be too much to have to cross through the station to go back and forth..?

No,going through the train station is very easy, it is open on all sides. Zurich is tiny, the main train station is quite compact. YOu could stay virtually anywhere in Zurich and get to 8005 on foot or by tram in 10 -15 minutes. Which hotel are you referring to on the Banhofstrasse side?

Cicerone, you are so precise in your accounts that I need to ask your help and advice. Can you check the train fare from Milan to Zurich? I'm finding crazy prices $330-400 USD per person. We will be in Zurich July 4-6 from Milan... Another group does GTG's (Get To Gethers) you on?
Thanks
Charles

OK I called Swiss Rail, and these are the fares they quoted for a one-way trip from Milan Centrale station to Zurich main station, for one adult:

1st Class: CHF117 (about US$94)
2nd Class: CHF72 (about US$58)

I have no reason to believe that Treinitalia’s fare quotes would be any different. These fares dont’ take into account any rail pass you may have which may entitle you to a discount. Also, if you want to take the super-fast Cisalpino trains, add another CHF22 for 1st Class and CHF15 for 2nd class. (The CIS is a great trip, very sleek trains that tilt at certain points as you are going so fast. Bring Dramamine. . . .)

Out of curiousity, I went on the Raileurope site and see that they are charging US$113 for 1st class and US$76 for second class. Nice little premium they are making, plus they get a US$15 handling fee.

You can call Swiss Rail if you want to confirm their prices. The number is 41-900-300-300. You may be able to get an e-mail quote as well, take a look at sbb.ch/en. I think you have time to buy them from Swiss Rail over the phone, and have them mailed to you in the US. However, you don’t really need to to buy tickets before you arrive, as there are many trains every day which make the trip.

I am actually moving from Zurich at the end of June to go back to Hong Kong where I lived from 1997-2002. I have really enjoyed my 3 years here, but could not pass up the opportunity to get back to Asia, which feels more like home to me. Maybe I will see you in Hong Kong sometime. . . .

Tyr23,

Please excuse me as I send a message to Cicerone --

Cicerone, I am ***VERY*** sorry that you're leaving Zurich! I just loved your very detailed and thorough posts, and I must admit I had hoped to buy you a beer or a hot chocolate one day to thank you on behalf of all Fodorites!

But I am very happy you're going someplace you enjoy even more than Schweiz! Thanks for all your work here!

Have a great time!

Swandav, thanks for the message. I will continue to lurk on this board, and figure I can comment for about a year on restaurants and hotels, after that, my info will be old. I will also continue to comment on itineraries, in my never-ending driving to get people to see more than Lucerne and Interlaken in this incredibly beautiful country. . . .
