Mike, stayed in the 9th last holdiay season at the Concorde St. Lazare. Very nice hotel. The hotel is right across from Gare St. Lazare.(train station) The 9th is known for having the big shopping area, especially big dept stores. Printemps and I forget the other big one's name. The opera house is in the 9th as well. It's a good area and you can easily walk to the Champs Elysses from there. I would prefer to be more central though. I did'nt find it to be sleazy.

Yes, but rue Victor Masse has M: Pigalle as its nearest metro, so I think Mike needs feedback based on that area, which is nowhere near Printemps or Galeries Lafayette.

yeah, I didn't answer because I really wasn't familiar with that exact street. But the 9th is a large district, as many are, and that street isn't near St-Lazare at all, nor the dept. stores. It's about one block south of bd Clichy and bd Rochechouart -- place Pigalle is the closest metro stop, but you can easily go a bit farther (maybe one block) and use the stop to the south instead, St Georges, which is what I'd recommend. It's on the same line, anyway. I do know that area a bit -- more around Trinite square and the Notre Dame de Lorette neighborhood, and that's fine and rather interesting, convenient shops and cafes. I actually like it a bit as a little different than the usual central Paris areas.

But I don't know rue Victor Masse exactly or it's immediate blocks. I think most tourists would find that a bit undesirable for a stay.

Rue Victor Masse is just a block south of Blvd. Clichy. I stayed in this same general area during a Paris trip a number of years back when I was taking French classes at a school that is located just a couple of blocks from rue Victor Masse. Its not a sleazy area, although if you walk up to Blvd. Clichy and down a bit you will find some of those peep show type places. Its probably not the area in which most tourists would choose to stay because its not as central, not as upscale, and is further from most of the tourist attractions (except Montmartre). There are other areas further south in the 9th that cater more to tourists and shoppers nearer to Blvd. Haussmann that you might prefer.
