hotel in the 5th or apartment in the 2nd

I'm having a hard time finding accomadations in paris for a family of five for around 400us/night. Most apartment rentals are not available or 7 night minimum, or 500+/night. There is an apartment through vacation in paris that is small(370ft), in the montorgueil area, and very inexpensive 200.00. The other option is two rooms at hotel Monge for around 430.00/night. My concerns are: first time in paris, want to be central, but also like the option of fridge and microwave as the three children are three teenage boys. Should I take one of the above options, or keep trying to find another, bigger apartment?

Hi J,

> There is an apartment through vacation in paris that is small(370ft), in the montorgueil area, and very inexpensive 200.00.

Do you have an address?

Rue Montorgueil is a nice shopping street.

Some parts of the area are nicer than others.

jonke -

I am not fimiliar enough with Paris to give you feedback on the location but people here have spoken very highly of the rental company vacation in Paris.

We stayed in a great apartment in Place des Victoires (2nd). Family of 4, but the place technically sleeps 6. Great location. Rue Montorgueil is a fun street, little markets, restaurants, etc. and just a couple of blocks from the apartment. We really loved it. I'd highly recommend if it's available. They do rent nightly.

Hi J,

Look up he address at www.mappy.com.

You can see some pix.

Also look it up at www.pagesjaunes.fr for more pix.

You are on a pedestrian street, close to a Metro stop.

We were in the neighborhood in 2005. See my trip report
http://fodors.com/forums/threadselec...p;tid=34676645

The apt looks nice.

You are out of the garment district, and not too close to Les Halles, in a very diverse neighborhood.

Hope this helps.

While I always prefer an apartment, that one is very small for a family of five with three teenage boys! With only one bathroom, it will take quite a while to get out of the door each morning. What dates will you be in Paris and where have you searched for hotel rooms? Perhaps we could help, I don't mind a quick search.

Minimm - I was thinking the same thing but with wanting to spend 400.00 USD a night I am not sure that jonke is going to do much better.

We found several 2 bedroom 2 bath apartments in Paris that sleep 6 but they were more around 450.00 - 500.00 USD a night.

How happy are the three teenage boys going to be on sofa beds etc - one of my daughters is fine and can sleep anywhere - the other is like the princess and the peas...

and the lack of photos make me a little nervous.

Rue Montorgueil is a fine area, quite central. But one bathroom for 5 people sounds a bit difficult unless they are all pretty quick. Try Hotel St Andre des Arts in the 6th, fabulous location but since it's a one star it's quite cheap. But one star just means things like no lift, I don't think there was a TV, no AC. The rooms and cleanliness, etc are fine. They also include breakfast in the price. Just bread and beverage but still.

my only concern is that the apt is really small (less than 20ft x 20ft) and that includes 2 rooms bathroom and kitchenette. Have you spoken to VIP? They may have a larger place available at that time.

Hi jonke:

I have rented apartments thru vacation in paris on 5 occasions and have been mostly pleased, don't know when you plan to go but 5 of us stayed in their one bedroom, #03 near invalides, if I remember correctly it had a double or queen bed and 1 small cot in bedroom, a very comfy futon and a twin sofa/trundle in the living area, a small but nicely equipped kitchen, pretty large bathroom (tub with shower attachment only) and a washer/dryer in the bath also. The location was good, easily to get around, grocery shops, restaurants, metro stop nearby, you may want to take a look at it.

Another option, have you tried

www.vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner)

I have used them also and was very pleased. Take a look at ID# 112368, it is within your price range, has 3 bedrooms, 1280 sq. feet and in a great area. Like vacation in paris, some of the vrbo apartments are in US $, some can be booked via credit card or paypal, the keyword here is SOME, look closely at the requirements.

Have a wonderful trip no matter where you stay.

Hi J,

The sole bathroom makes me think that you might also want to consider the Hotel Picpus, recommended by another poster here.

About 60E/nite Dbl, 65E/nite triple.

It is not central, but is close to metro stops.

Thanks for all the great advice/ideas. The one bathroom would be a concern, beds aren't,as they are boys who sleep anywhere. I'll be there for 3 nights, July 3- July 6. I just sent another request for an apartment to paris furnished apartments, and rentparis. Both of these seem to rent nightly. I have lost track of how many places of requested in the past week. I just don't want to give up too early, and not be satisfied with my choice. I think priorities for me are, location:safe, close to sights, close to markets for breakfast snacks etc.., I, want it to be a reputable hotel or agency, and a fridge. Air conditioning would also be nice, as it's July, but not sure it's necessary. J

I am renting 112368 VBO and with the current exchange rate it worked out to 484.50 a night...

minimn Mar 8th, 2008 11:13 AM

After doing a quick search for those dates, this is what I came up with. I have been to Paris 15 times and if I were traveling with three teenage boys on a tight budget, I would book two rooms at the Hotel de France Invalides. Get a triple for the boys and a double for parents and it will be around $400 a night. It's a good location for Eiffel Tower and Les Invalides, easy hop on the metro for Musee d'Orsay and Louvre, etc. Very safe, upscale neighborhood, plenty of shops and boulangeries for snacks. The rooms have mini bars to store cold drinks and snacks. Check it out on Trip Advisor for reviews. I don't think I would fool with an apartment for just a few nights. You can do that on your next trip...you WILL be back!

I would not book that apartment for a group of five. Have to agree with Peg - two rooms at a hotel sounds much better. The Monge sounds like a good option.

Hi Jonke, we are a family of 4 and have booked an apartment in the same general area with VIP try www.vacationinparis.com/apts/id_79.htm for 4 nights in Sept. It is larger than the one you have picked with a separate toilet area and will only cost us 195USD per night.

rosetravels Mar 10th, 2008 08:41 PM

Marie - your apartment looks really great. I love that neighborhood. Dawn - what a beautiful apartment for your special Christmas trip. I love the kitchen!
