hotel in ROME - looking for a tip!!
 

ok I am doing the mediterrean carnival liberty cruise the first two weeks of October (honeymoon!). Cannot wait! Will be my first time in Italy and the other wonderful places we'll be visiting. What I am looking for some help on is where to stay in Rome: after the cruise ends we'll be spending 3 extra days back in Rome (where the cruise originates). Any reccomendations for hotels? I don't know where to start! We will not have a car or anything so am looking for something in the middle of the action! Will not be over the weekend. Not looking to spend more than $150-$175 a night. thanks so much!!

mikieguns - Check out venere.com and tripadvisor.com for hotel reviews and prices. If you stay in the center of the city, not having a car is not a problem.

FYI, your cruise ship docks in Civitavecchia, not Rome.

You will have to get from one to the other.

Options:
Cab to Civitavecchia Centrale, train to Rome TE (see www.trenitalia.com),
private limo from dock to hotel in Rome.

We enjoyed Hotel Springhouse because we wanted to be walking distance to the Vatican. But this is not "center of the action". The hotel was an easy walk from a metro stop, just one short ride from the center/train station, and they had bicycles for our use. We wanted to stay in more of a neighborhood to get a feel for life in Rome and actually were happy, after our day excursions to the "action", to be retiring to a more quiet neighborhood.

May I suggest something a bit different? My wife and I stayed in a convent only one short block from Campo Fiori when we were in Rome for five nights last September. The convent is called Casa Santa Brigida. It is attached to the Santa Brigida church. It is a lovely facility run by the nuns of the same name. The rooms are spotlessly clean and have air conditioning. Breakfast is served each morning by the nuns in their own breakfast room. The convent is situated on the Piazza Farnese, which is a lovely, quiet piazza only steps from Campo Fiori and the hustle and bustle associated with it. The convent also has a beautiful rooftop terrace above the fourth floor of their building - very nice location to relax and sip some wine, look out over the rooftops of Rome, or gaze at the French embassy building next door.

We enjoyed our stay there and can recommend it to you. It is obviously a quiet place (read: no room parties) which is also something we enjoyed.

Whatever your choice, the advice about what area to choose your hotel in is correct. You will be delighted with the area and with Rome. We had a terrific time there.

In England, a tip is somewhere we dump our rubbish, or a name for a messy place... ;)

The only place I stayed in Rome was slightly above tip status, but not much, so no recommendations here.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding/honeymoon. I would suggest Nicolas Inn B&B by the Colosseum...www.nicolasinn.com. I believe they also arrange transportation from the port into Rome.

We stayed at the Stendal hotel in Rome last year for our honeymoon. Our travel agent arranged our entire trip--so I do not know the actual price of this hotel being we had a whole package price. It was centrally located--less than 5 minutes to the Trevi Fountain. The bus stopped right in front to go to the vatican, and the metro was right on the corner.

Mikie: we stayed at Hotel Lancelot in June 2005. It was terrific; impeccably clean, great location, small balcony, internet access, very nice breakfast, helpful family-run, some limited parking. On our return, I would not even consider staying elsewhere. Great value in your price range. Highly recommended on tripadvisor. Check out their web site http://www.lancelothotel.com. Enjoy!

If you stay in Rome, I would recommend staying in the nicest, most comfy accommodations that you can afford - maybe even splurge a little. Heck, it's your honeymoon anyway!
Rome is an incredible city with lots to do and see. I was a bit overwhelmed and facinated by it all . Our remodeled hotel was not too far from the train station (convenient), and the name escapes me, but I really wish that we had spent more on a quieter, comfier, cozier, brighter place to retreat to after exploring the city all day and evening. Our room was clean, but a bit dark and facing a noisy street. Just my opinion. HTH.

We have docked at Civitavecchia before. It is very easy and quite fast to get to Rome. By all means, COME TO ROME!
The last time (in May 05) we shared a van with 2 other couples which made it very reasonable and took less than an hour. (He dropped us at the train station and the others at hotels.) If you need a reference, let me know. We used Claudio, and he is the absolute best. Totally reliable and with a great command of both Roman history AND the English language!
Alternatively, you can catch a train that comes directly to Rome - but with cruise luggage, you might want to consider how to get to the station. You can walk it, but it's a way with a lot of luggage.
You will love Rome and it will abe a great place to have in your Honeymoon Memories. Be sure that you see the Coleseum lit up at night! But be sure and come to Rome.
