Hotel in Rome
 

We are arriving in Rome in September. I am looking for a hotel somewhere near the center of Rome. We would like something reasonable. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, my cell phone will not work in Italy. Is it best to rent a phone or is there a better way to be able to comunicate with home.

How many people are traveling? How long are you staying? What is an acceptable price range per day?

If you are going to be in Rome more than a day or two also consider renting an apartment. It actually can be less expensive than an upscale hotel. You have more room, and a kitchenette, which is useful. Look at sleepinitaly.com and VRBO.com (VRBO = vacation rentals by owner). And Google vacation rentals Rome for more listings.

We stayed in an apartment near the Spanish Steps, through rentalinrome.com, for less than 110 euros.

Many of us here have stayed in the Arco del Lauro B&B in the Trastevere section of Rome. I found it just OK, and preferred an apartment, but I am familiar with Rome.

If you are willing to do your homework, an apartment is a good deal. If you don't want the hassle of finding your own way around, restaurants, directions, etc. you may be best off in a hotel.

There are affordable hotel options around the Termini rail station.

All this is sort of beside the point if we don't know your budget and needs.

Phone: some hotels have phones that you can use with inexpensive phone cards; some don't. You can rent or purchase a phone. You can use internet cafes or take a computer or other device for Skype. Lots of ways to communicate with home.

It really depends on what your requirements are. Anyway, I've discovered a really nice budget option approximately 10mins by foot for Colosseum - its name was Romebed and the price was around 50eur for double room.

I strongly suggest renting an apartment. Rome hotels are awfully expensive, and you can save money when living in an apartment by eating your breakfast and lunch there. Re your phone, there are several options. My wife and I solved the problem by buying inexpensive quadband gsm phones on ebay and then buying international sims, also on ebay - this one,
