I am traveling to Rome for 3 nights in early July. We are 3 adults (2 brothers and mother) going to Rome for the first time. We are looking for a hotel to stay in for around $150-200 per night for one room.

We were going to stay near the central station since we will be arriving and departing via airplane, but I've read that maybe we shouldn't. We plan on hitting all the major attractions in the 3 days we are there.

Any advice on a good hotel to stay in would be appreciated.

Let's do a simple "math" to see if staying near the central station (=Termini?) makes sense.

Suppose you are staying 10min by foot from the station. So you drag your luggage under hot July sun. The locations around Termini has some attraction, but certainly not the center of attractions. Presuming you are taking Leonardo express. That is €14x3=€42.

Now, remove the central station restriction. You take a taxi from the airport to anywhere inside Rome. The fare is fixed around €40. Not only that, you don't have to buy train ticket nor drag your luggage. The taxi drive brings you right up to the hotel front, say near Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Campo dei Fiori, etc.

Now, does it still make sense staying near the station? What benefit did you think you were getting by staying near the station?

Assuming you want AC (and I think summer in Rome would be madness without out it) you have to check. Many of the budget places donot have AC - ot have limitations on it. And your $200 is only about 150 euros for a triple - likely to be one double bed and a roll-away in many places.

Congrats on your trip to Rome! If possible, it would be wonderful to stay in the centro area - especially as it's your first trip to the city. What you might perhaps consider, from a cost perspective, is an apartment.

This type of accommodation may provide you more "room" for less cost! There are many apartments (and companies that rent them) all over Rome. Just BE VERY CAREFUL to do your research - and use a reputable agent if you go this route. You might also consider the Vatican/Prati area. Perhaps a little more "attractive" than the Termini area; it's also populated with shopping options (a great market - Mercato Trionfale -and Via Cola di Rienzo) and many restaurants.
