Hotel in Orvieto

I have reservations already booked at the Hotel Maitani in Orvieto for May 2005. Since that time I have seen some unfavorable comments on this 4-star hotel. Mostly involving it being old and rundown. Is there someone who has stayed there and can reassure me this is a good choice of hotel, clean, updated, worth the price E144 or should I look elsewhere?

How about the Hotel Duomo?

We're staying at Locanda Rosati tomorrow night. It gets only rave reviews on Fodors, I will tell you about it when I return.

The only problem -- it's not exactly in Orvieto -- on the outskirts (5-6 miles). So, I would guess you would need a car. Are you train'ing, bus'ing, or car'ing? How many nights are you staying in Orvieto?

Push comes to shove, you might even be better off if you don't have a car to stay there and taxi to/from. I believe I'm only paying 115 Euro for the two of us, including breakfast. Maybe the rates will drop in October? ((b))

We stayed at Hotel Duomo in August of this year. Great hotel. Our room was large, very clean, and the hotel is very close to the Duomo. If we ever go back to Orvieto again, I will stay there. I can't remember what we paid, but I think it was about 110 Euro a night with buffet breakfast.

Have a great trip.

We stayed at the Piccolomini about a year ago based on Michelin and good reviews on this forum. I found it rather grim. tho we may have gotten a less than desirable room because the rest of the hotel was filled with a group. Breakfast was in the basement whcih was quite dungeonlike. Service was very good and of course we were right in the town. I've heard La Badia is nice, but believe it's outside and sounds like its filled with Americanos.
(tho Piccolomini was, too.)

This thread was like a blast from the past...we arrived late one afternoon in Orvieto, loved the place so much we decided to stay. We found the Hotel Duomo and checked out the room. It was very plain, but spotlessly clean, and less than $20. We stayed and loved it...especially the view (which of the back of the Duomo). This was 20 years ago. But it's nice to see that it has been upgraded (per SRS) but still spotlessly clean!

Now I wonder if the little shop that makes foccaccia nearby is still there. We saw a steady stream of locals going in and coming out with fragrant slices. So we joined them...mmm....brings back great memories.

One more Orvieto tip: see if Mastra Anna still has her little shop with handpainted ceramics off the piazza in front of the Duomo. She's a real original...the best place to buy gifts or things for yourself. Her designs are artsy, either clean and modern or tastefully funky. None of that copied/ mass produced/ see it everywhere stuff. Definitely worth a look!
